As with all of his anthologies, the quality of writing here is superb, coming from the likes of Matthew Hughes, Ysabeau S. Wilce, Eleanor Arnason, Tim Powers, Lavie Tidhar and George R.R. Martin to name a handful. All the stories are original to this volume, except for the Martin, which was originally published in another anthology edited by Mr. Dozois (along with Mr. Martin), “Songs of the Dying Earth.” Of course, each reader will choose different stories as their favourites; in my case, I especially liked Mr. Hughes’ “The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable,” Ms. Wilce’s “Biography of a Bouncing Boy Terror, Chapter II: Jumping Jack in Love,” Kate Elliott’s “Bloom,” and Scott Lynch’s “The Fall and Rise of the House of the Wizard Malkuril.” Although all the stories are unified by the theme of magic, each is completely unlike each other; after all, magic is a big theme! As mentioned above, however, the quality of each author’s writing here is extremely high and any lover of fantasy (or just good fiction) will find something to love in the volume. I, along with many others, will continue to miss Mr. Dozois’ amazing editing talent for a long time to come. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

"An anthology celebrating the witches and sorcerers of epic fantasy--featuring stories by George R. R. Martin, Scott Lynch, Megan Lindholm, and many more! Hot on the heels of award-winning editor Gardner Dozois's (Rogues, Old Venus) acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf...and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda...and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore...and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped--or misshaped--by the potent magic they seek to wield. Yet though their abilities may be godlike, these men and women remain human...some might say all too human. Such is their curse. And their glory. In these pages, seventeen of today's top fantasy writers--including award-winners K. J. Parker (The Two of Swords), Megan Lindholm (The Windsingers), John Crowley (The Deep), Tim Powers (Last Call), Liz Williams (Snake Agent), Elizabeth Bear (Eternal Sky Trilogy), George R. R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), Kate Elliott (The Court of Fives Trilogy), Scott Lynch (The Republic of Thieves), and more--cast wondrous spells that thrillingly evoke the mysterious, awesome, and at times downright terrifying worlds where magic reigns supreme: worlds as far away as forever...and as near as next door"-- Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

I read a lot of anthology books, & I'm used to there being a few stories in any given collection that I wouldn't care for. In this collection though I didn't end up skipping any of them, and found several new authors to check out their other works.
I have to add the last item in this volume, "The Fall and Rise of the House of Malkuril" was worth the price of the book by itself! ( )
