#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The latest from legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting, extraordinarily eerie, and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together--a timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences. Although Scott Carey doesn't look any different, he's been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn't want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King's most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade--but escalating--battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott's lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face-including his own--he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott's affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others. From Stephen King, our "most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work" (The Guardian), Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, as gloriously joyful (with a twinge of deep sadness) as "It's a Wonderful Life."… (mais)

This was a book I had a hard time putting down, and was excited to get back to it. The definition of a four star book, but I gave it one star. King did not come close describing the road race. Runners line up at the start by skill, not by number assigned. People do not get knocked around/shoved at start of races - it is civil. The farther back you are the slower the start but no worries about getting trampled or elbowed. When getting passed or passing the snide comments do not occur. And worst, the casualties described of people laying on the side of the course holding different body parts may happen in a horror novel, but not in a road race. Though I will admit there is pain... Wow, can't believe Stephen King single-handedly ended homophobia.

Was recommended this book after expressing my displeasure with King as a writer... got to say it didn't help any. I think I'm done with him, to be honest. ( )

Simple feel-good story. No more, no less. I liked the way he dealt with the same-sex married couple and the town's reaction to it. The character felt relatable, not because of the predicament he's in, but to the fact that he behaves in a particular way. You'll understand when you read. ( )

I've seen a lot of positive reviews of this, and a lot of negative ones. I'll say now, I'm not going to drool over it, it's nowhere near King's best, but then again, King's best is a very long list.

On the other hand, I'm not going to take exception to it for a couple of mistakes. Were some of the characters underdeveloped, including the married lesbian couple? Yes. I would have liked a bit more background on why both women were as they currently are.

But this is not a book with easy answers, and that, to me, is one of its strengths. Minor spoiler alert right here, but you never find out why Scott got his affliction, or what it is. Just like you don't really know why his marriage ended. Or what causes the turnaround toward the end.

This story isn't about answers. It's more about, as a good friend of mine always says, being your best self. That's never an easy thing to do, especially when others are not being their best selves. But this is about, forgive the pun, rising above all that.

Scott has to overcome a lot to be that best version of him, and it takes a strange set of circumstances for it to happen. But when he does, even more strange circumstances make it easier for others to also discover their ability to be a better version of themselves too.

And, sorry, I know this will piss off some, but I don't give a flying fuck whether it was an older white guy that helped out the lesbians. King showed us both what the best and the worst that white guys can be in Elevation, and he showed what the world can be if we all forget about race and sexuality and just reach out a hand in friendship, no matter who you are.

So, for me, this was an unusually (again, pardon the pun) uplifting story from King. And I liked it.

Now, excuse me while I go try to be my best self. ( )

This novel isn't horror, if that's what you've come looking for you will be sorely disappointed. I'd say it's more of a speculative fiction, but even that isn't quite right.

I actually found this one of King's more enjoyable novellas. The writing was easy, comfortable, quick, the story speeds up in time with the character's particular dilemma. It gave me feelings of Insomnia and Thinner but also something entirely new and a bit more modern.

The side characters weren't just side characters, they were well developed and it felt like we were getting to know them through the MC's eyes rather than getting to know him, so much. It just really suited the story, an interesting point of view.

I highly recommend this one. I hadn't heard about it until I saw it on a shelf at KMart and picked it up on a whim. Not disappointed. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down once I got going. ( )
