Inhalt:
Es ist eine extrem dunkle Nacht und der Sturm tobt um die Ölplattform irgendwo im Atlantik vor Marokko, doch die Bohrungen müssen weitergehen. Als die Arbeiten endlich abgebrochen werden, kommt einer der Männer nicht mehr zurück: Mátyás, der beste Freund von Waclaw. Die Suche wird aus Kostengründen rasch eingestellt. Waclaw erhält Urlaub und reist nach Ungarn, um die Sachen seines toten Freundes an dessen Familie zu übergeben. Will er wirklich wieder zurück, auf die nächste Ölplattform? Er macht sich stattdessen auf die Suche nach seinen Wurzeln, nach dem Rest seines Lebens.

Thema und Genre:
Man könnte diesen Roman als Roadmovie in einzelnen Bildern bezeichnen, Szenen, die durch plötzliche Erinnerungen wie schräg geschachtelt auftauchen und wieder verschwinden. Es geht um das Leben der Menschen in einer globalisierten Welt, wo Entfernungen ein möglicher Weg aus der Armut sind, mehr Geld für sich und die Familie. Natürlich ist auch Fernweh ein Thema, die Sehnsucht, die Enge der Kindheit zu verlassen. Es geht auch um die Frage, was der Verlust der eigenen Wurzeln mit den Menschen macht.

Charaktere:
Waclaw, schon über 50 Jahre alt, ist anders, als man sich Männer im harten, gefährlichen Leben mitten auf dem Meer vorstellt. Er ist manchmal verträumt, verloren, er ist auf der Suche nach seinem „anderen“ Leben, nach Milena, die er immer wieder verlassen hat, um das fehlende Geld auf einer Ölbohrinsel zu verdienen. Als er Enzo „Alois“ in Bobbio, Norditalien, besucht, den besten Freund seines verstorbenen Vaters, überzeugt ihn dieser, weiter nach Norden zu fahren, zu Milena. Waclaw trifft auf seiner Reise die unterschiedlichsten Personen, sie alle sind sehr gut beschrieben und überzeugen.

Handlung und Sprachstil:
Die Reise von Waclaw ist das chronologische Kernstück der Handlung, immer neue Zwischenhalte machen die Ereignisse interessant und überraschen. Die Frage, ob es eine Zukunft mit Milena geben kann, macht die Geschichte spannend. Die wie auf Stichworte bunt in die Handlung geschriebenen Erinnerungen irritieren teilweise den Ablauf und unterbrechen den Lesefluss. Wirklich großartig und beeindruckend ist die poetische Sprache dieser Autorin. Metapher und Symbolik wie die enge Bohrinsel, der enge Pick-up, Brieftauben als Symbol für Heimkehr, bereichern die Schilderungen und regen zum Nachdenken an.

Fazit:
Für mich ist es besonders die intensive Sprache, in der diese innere und äußere Reise von Afrika bis an die polnische Ostseeküste geschildert wird, die diesen Roman prägt. Keine einfach zu lesende Geschichte, teilweise deprimierend, mit einem ernsten, vielschichtigen Thema, das auch in Zukunft gesellschaftlich aktuell sein wird. Für diesen ersten Roman einer jungen Autorin braucht man Zeit, aber die sollte man sich nehmen.
