"In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation. One out-of-work British actress pays the rent on her New York City apartment the only way she can: as a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers, hired to entrap straying husbands. When the cops begin investigating one of her targets for murdering his wife--and potentially others--they ask her to lure the suspect into a confession. But with the actress pretending to be someone she isn't, differentiating the decoy from the prey becomes impossible--and deadly"--… (mais)

The story focuses on Claire, a struggling actress who came to America from England to pursue an acting career. Except a million people come to America, New York City especially, to pursue an acting career and they don't come with black marks on their record like Claire does. So she finds a job with a divorce lawyer and basically makes money by tricking men into thinking she wants to sleep with them while she records their conversations.

Through her work, Claire meets Stella and then Stella meets dead. Claire gets arrested for the murder. And what comes next is such a twisty, turny, upside story that you have to read it to believe it. When the book ended, I sat there staring and thinking WTF did I just read? I almost feel like I need to go back to read it again just to see if there were clues I totally missed along the way. Seriously, did not figure it out until the author told me what happened.

One bit about the story that annoyed me were the chapter openings that read like a script, including stage directions but you get used to it. None of the characters are trustworthy and I'm not even sure they are likeable but it's definitely a story you need to read to believe.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.

Although this book was written in a very different manner than previous books, I still found it enjoyable and it held my attention. It was an interesting story line and had quite a few twists that I did not expect. Definitely kept me guessing until the end. ( )

This is the most twisted story I've read in a long time! I got sucked into the story quickly and couldn't put the book down! Deeply disturbing...dark....and mesmerizing.

Claire Wright is a struggling actress. To fund her dreams, she works for a law firm. She isn't a paralegal. Or an assistant. Or anything run-of-the-mill like that. She is....a trap. Claire tricks men. With a hidden camera in her purse and her acting talent, she works as a decoy for Kerr-Adler to provide proof of infidelity in divorce cases. Things work out pretty well at first....until she is assigned to trap Patrick Fogler. When his wife Stella is found murdered, Claire knows she is in over her head, but she can't stop. Not only is she accused of stealing money from the dead woman's hotel room, but she's strangely attracted to Patrick. And it only gets worse.

So many twists. So disturbing and demented. But it works. All of the characters are completely unlikable. I wasn't sympathetic to a single one. But, I couldn't stop reading. Just when I thought things couldn't possibly get any more strange and horrible....they always did.

Awesome psychological thriller! Very well-written and quite disturbing! Not, not, not for the faint of heart! J.P. Delaney is a pseudonym used by author Tony Strong. I will definitely be reading more by this author, as soon as I recover from the creepiness I'm still feeling from this one! I feel like I need to take about 4 showers and watch Disney movies for a week just to recover. ha ha :) A book that creeps me out this badly deserves full stars. Very well written!

**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Random House/Ballentine via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.** ( )

Found the Girl Before very interesting, the writer's style intriguing so thought would venture into the updated version of first novel. Well, soon after starting into it thought I had stumbled into a BDSM story which mildly surprised me but gave it a bit more time to develop and glad I did.

Have very mixed feelings about everything. The story is very interesting but at times bland. The characters, especially the principal of the story, draw you in never quite making you comfortable. Overall the story is a search for a serial killer using the heroine as bait yet she often seems as if maybe just maybe we are searching for her. This is what makes this an interesting read. At times the writing and story line were really very good then it would get flat. Towards the end it feels like the writer lost steam or was searching for the right climax. If the writing was a little more even and stronger believe this could have been a much above average read. As it is did vacillate between 3 and 4 stars but believe it is a strong 3 stars.

I wanted to like this, but I just couldn’t get invested enough in the main character to believe her actions, motivations, or any of the twists and turns of the plot. She seemed kind of shady and the ending felt a little bit unfulfilling. Ultimately, there was too much happening in the plot for any of it to work for me. ( )
