Romance. Historical Fiction. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:The tumultuous, edge-of-your-seat conclusion to the New York Times bestselling AND I DARKEN series—the epic saga that reads like Game of Thrones . . . if it were set in the Ottoman Empire. Who will live? Who will die? And who will rule triumphant?
Haunted by the sacrifices he made in Constantinople, Radu is called back to the new capital. Mehmed is building an empire, becoming the sultan his people need. But Mehmed has a secret: as emperor, he is more powerful than ever . . . and desperately lonely. Does this mean Radu can finally have more with Mehmed . . . and would he even want it?
Lada's rule of absolute justice has created a Wallachia free of crime. But Lada won't rest until everyone knows that her country's borders are inviolable. Determined to send a message of defiance, she has the bodies of Mehmed's peace envoy delivered to him, leaving Radu and Mehmed with no choice. If Lada is allowed to continue, only death will prosper. They must go to war against the girl prince.
But Mehmed knows that he loves her. He understands her. She must lose to him so he can keep her safe. Radu alone fears that they are underestimating his sister's indomitable will. Only by destroying everything that came before—including her relationships—can Lada truly build the country she wants.
Claim the throne. Demand the crown. Rule the world.

I take back every doubt I had in the first two books, because Kiersten White brought everything together BRILLIANTLY. This book was so action-packed and thematically sound that it made the previous books make complete sense. There was a point to the plotlines/motivations I struggled with previously, and significant, far-reaching points at that. I was completely enveloped in the events in this book, continually rooting both for and against each main character because they were so multi-dimensional (neither 100% good nor 100% evil, fully nuanced). The ending felt so, so, SO satisfying with Radu's family dynamics. Really such a strong ending to a series on all counts, and if you're struggling at all with the first two books, I highly recommend pushing through and finishing. ( )

Well, I'm done with the series. This installment feels very much like a wrap-up. Without a strong narrative arc, it reads to me less like a story than like a list of things the characters did. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sad the series is done. ( )

An all around solid historical fiction trilogy. ( )

teen/adult historical fiction (part 3 of an alternate history with Vlad the Impaler replaced with Lada the lady Prince of Wallachia and LGBTQA interest)
I was excited to read part 3 of the Conqueror's Saga (with the love triangle between warrior Lada, Mehmet the Turkish bisexual sultan, and Lada's quiet and peaceful gay brother Radu) but the beginning drags a bit with all the warmongering. I mean, yeah, it's Lada the Impaler, but still. It felt like half the book was over before the main characters actually interacted and did something other than wage war, but I still enjoyed it.

parental notes: includes lots of violence (no kidding) and some sexual content that leads to pregnancy. ( )

Wow. This book. MY HEART! This was the perfect conclusion, and I ADORED IT!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!! I love this series. A LOT.

However I can't quite justify giving it five stars. Because quite frankly, the first half was pretty boring. If you've seen my reviews of the first two, you know I've had some mixed feelings towards these books. The first one was good, but a bit of a mess, and I wasn't super invested. In the second I adored Radu's chapters, but was bored out of my mind by Lada's.

With this one, I found the beginning boring, but from about the halfway point on this book was AMAZING.

Like, really amazing. If you discount the first half, this book was just about perfect. But yeah... the first half is a lot of book to discount. I mean, don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible. It was okay. I still loved the characters, and there were interesting parts (Especially with my precious child, Radu). I was just... not super invested, and definitely bored.

But then! Then it got SO GOOD!!! SO SO SO SO SO SO GOOD!!!!!!

So. A short list of things I loved:

- Lada was badass and amazing as usual. I adore this feisty stabby murderous girl! Wait... that sounds bad... But seriously. Lada is amazing! And just so so so well developed! I love her.

- The plot got sooooo good!

- Nazira and Fatima! These two are so precious together and I love them with all my heart!! Nazira is totally badass and wonderful, and Fatima is such a sweetheart, and AHHHHHHHHH!!!

- Radu. Radu is the most precious darling ever and I love him with all my heart!! He is SUCH a sweetheart and he goes through so much and WHY MUST HER SUFFER SO?!?!?!??!?!? CAN HE JUST BE HAPPY PLEASE?!!?!?!?!?!?! I AM SO GLAD HE AT LEAST GOT A HAPPY ENDING BECAUSE HE DESERVED IT!!!!

- RADU AND CYPRIAN RADU AND CYPRIAN RADU AND CYPRIAN!!!!!! THESE TWO ARE SO WONDERFUL AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS BEAUTIFUL AND IT WAS SO WELL DEVELOPED AND I SHIP THESE TWO WITH ALL OF MY HEART AND THEY DESERVE ALL THE HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD!! !!ALL OF IT, YOU HEAR ME?!???

- Also I actually... really liked the ending? It shattered my heart into a million pieces, but it just felt... right. I love Lada. I really, really do, but she got what she wanted. She ruled for years. And she died in battle, which is also what she would have wanted. And it just felt really right. Even though it broke my heart. And as much as my heart HURT for Radu as well, I'm also just really really glad HE survived and found happiness.

Overall this was a super satisfying conclusion to a series I adore!! The characters were perfection (as always) and I was emotionally destroyed, but just so happy with this book also! And I'm still an emotional mess whenever I think of this book, sooo... It clearly impacted me pretty hard. BECAUSE MY DARLINGS!!!

Yeah, go read this series.

HOW DO I DEAL WITH THIS MESS OF EMOTIONS?!?!?!?! SOOOOO GOOD! SO HEARTBREAKING! AHDFDGDSAGJAFGDFGJDHGFHG!!

Okay, but how do I rate this? The first half was pretty slow... and then it got SO GOOD. I'm leaving it at four stars for now, because it's definitely not getting any lower than four, I just CAN'T DECIDE! Does it deserve 4? 4.5? 5? HELP ME!

Review and more decisive rating to come.

***Pre-review, June 2, 2018***

I NEED THIS I NEED THIS I NEED THIS I NEED THIS I NEED THIS.

Also I totally thought this was already out? But it's not? And now I need to wait a whole month and a half? ( )
