Mona Lisa's Ghost takes readers on a thoroughly researched mesmerizing and magical journey incorporating a mix of art history, time-travel fantasy, communication across time, reincarnation, high tech devices, science, and the mystery of the tiny numbers and letters painted into the eyes of Leonardo da Vinci's 500-year-old Renaissance masterpiece, the Mona Lisa. This is a fascinating story for young and old with its wonderful narrative drive, splendid gallery of characters, rich descriptions, and vivid scenes, as well as material that is very familiar to Nancy Kunhardt Lodge who holds a PhD in Renaissance Art. Make no mistake about it, once again she has proven herself to be a masterful plotter and story teller who is marvelously inventive as she smoothly weaves the appreciation of art and art history into her yarn. And by the way, as she mentions in the Acknowledgements, she had consulted with her sixth grade beta readers at The River Valley Charter School who gave her invaluable editorial advice on dialogue and plot revision. This is the second book in the Lucy Nightengale Adventure Series, and I read this one before grabbing the first. I would, however, recommending reading the first book first, since the events and characters in book two build off of the story in book one.

Lucy and Sam have started up SLARP (Sam and Lucy's Anomalies Research Project) and hit their first 'case'. During a class discussion at school about the results of a scientific scan on the Mona Lisa, Lucy notices a chaotic, stormy, and purple swirl engulfing the background of the painting. And it makes her feel terrible. Sam explains that its a problem with the molecules within the painting, and the only way to save it is for Lucy to head to Paris and see what she can do. While there, Lucy runs into a classmate, who claims to be the reincarnation of the woman portrayed in the Mona Lisa, and she's determined to steal her painting back. Even Lucy isn't ready for the adventure which ensues after that.

This is a fun book packed to the gills with adventure, imagination and even some wonderful art and history tidbits. With a bit of the feel of the relationship between James Bond and Q, Lucy and Sam head off to save the Mona Lisa from turning into a black hole. There's definitely a huge amount of fantasy thrown in with the action and scientific nods. A massive amount. Everything from shape-shifting monsters to aliens to time travel. . .and anything else the imagination allows. . .is tossed in. Oh, and we can't forget Lucy's mentor, the Wise One or a dog from another planet who loves to sit in a rocking chair.

There are super-duper amazing gadgets created by Sam, all of which are top secret and could be stolen by some unknown evil group. . .if the group even exists. And Lucy has her own 'super power' of high frequency thought, which brings things into existence and gives her a direct, mental link to Sam in the most dire of circumstances. Sam, meanwhile, is a class all of his own, and while Lucy dives from one perilous situation into the next, he is off to some top-secret conference up north, which was founded by a Viking long ago. As said, there is a lot going on, which shoves at imaginations borders and ventures beyond. At times, it gets a little chaotic, some questions are left open or unexplained, and more science friendly readers will question a thing or two, but the tale is nothing if not fast-paced and provides an explosive ride.

On top of all of this, art and history facts weave into the mystery and teach readers something along the way. In this book, the history behind the Mona Lisa as well as an introduction to Leonardo da Vinci flows amidst the fun. The author does a wonderful job at keeping the historic facts from becoming dry, while making sure some sit and won't be forgotten. It's an intriguing and clever mixture, which is sure to help kids gain a greater appreciation for art and the artists.

Middle graders who love adventure, science fiction and whose fantasies know no limits are sure to enjoy this series.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it enough to want to leave my honest thoughts. ( )

This is a brilliant book, beautifully written. It’s right up there with Alice in Wonderland. Witty, perceptive and spectacularly imaginative, it is the story of how Lucy Nightingale gave Lisa Gherardini her smile back. In it, the real and the unreal, the impossible and the possible, all take place at the same time. If that doesn’t unclog your perception lattices, nothing will.

Anyone who has read my review of Ms Lodge’s first book about Lucy and Wilbur – The Crystal Navigator – will know that I am a fan of her work for a bunch of very good reasons. Mona Lisa’s Ghost brings us another thrilling set of adventures had by Lucy and Wilbur, helped along by the brilliance and inventiveness of her genius friend, Sam Winter. Sam and Lucy have founded SLARP – “Sam and Lucy’s Anomalies Research Project – to investigate and explain odd or out of the ordinary happenings called anomalies.” You can deduce from this that Lucy and Sam are “anomalologists”.

Sam too has a canine sidekick: his sheep dog, Doppler. Their relationship blossomed when Sam learned to speak Doppler’s language, after which Doppler “warned him about the approach of strangers, reminded him when it was time to go in for dinner, and entertained him with stories of his advice to pet owners in online chat rooms.”

Sam’s “molecular osmosis” theory proposes that obsolete inventions still teem with genius-laden molecules that will wriggle from the invention into the brain of any person who holds them long enough. Sam is a boffin (like Q in the James Bond stories) who invents essential devices to get field agent Lucy out of extraordinary scrapes while she takes on the daunting task of tackling whatever anomaly they are currently investigating.

Along the way, she discovers she can still rely on the help of a Wise One named Wilbur, who hails from the planet Wilwahren (= seeks to safeguard). Wise Ones are magical beings whose only job is listening for the wishes of children in trouble. Wilbur is her lifelong friend who retains the shape of a dignified corgi to challenge her assumptions, given that her ‘perception lattices’ are still clogged.

Tempting though it is, I won’t go into any more detail, because Ms Lodge tells the story so much more brilliantly than I ever could. I just want to give you enough of a flavour of the author’s genius as an Art historian, a perceptive observer of humanity and a brilliantly inventive writer to make you want to read this book for yourself. If you ever suspended your disbelief in a good cause while reading Alice in Wonderland, then Mona Lisa’s Ghost will challenge, delight and intrigue you in equal measure. Bright children will love it. They will learn a lot while opening their minds to the infinite possibilities contained within our standard definition of ‘reality’. With any luck, they will learn “how to see past the surface of the earthly world to the reality of the spiritual world.”

I only hope there are enough bright adults out there to point them in its direction.

Mona Lisa's Ghost: Lucy Nightingale, Book 2 is a science fiction and fantasy novel for children and preteens written by Nancy Kunhardt Lodge. Who stole the Mona Lisa from its secure location in the Louvre, leaving no traces of the theft? Lucy Nightingale and her science-geek best friend, Sam Winter, formed the SLARP, otherwise known as Sam and Lucy’s Anomalies Research Project, to solve exactly this kind of mystery. Lucy had a particular fondness for this picture, as well as its brilliant creator, as a result of her adventures in the first book in this series, The Crystal Navigator. So when her teacher showed her class the video about the Mona Lisa being restored to its place in the Louvre, after having been studied with a Spectrographic Scanner, Lucy was stunned to see the changes that had occurred to the picture. The golden-toned backdrop had been replaced with an angry purple sky that bristled with lightning bolts. Lisa, herself, was in tears, and when Lucy looked even more closely at her eyes, she could swear there were letters in Lisa’s eyes. What had happened? Lucy was determined to find out and try to reverse the damage which seemed to be worsening before her very eyes.

Nancy Kunhardt Lodge’s science fiction and fantasy novel for children, Mona Lisa's Ghost: Lucy Nightingale, Book 2, is a beautifully written, imaginative and action-packed adventure story that just happens to have one of the most intriguing young heroes I’ve come across -- and I’m thrilled to see that she’s a girl. The relationship between Sam and Lucy is marvelous, and it comes quite close to that between Q and agent 007 in Ian Fleming’s iconic James Bond series. I love seeing what new device Sam dreams up, and then getting to see Lucy use it in the field is grand fun. This time-traveling series educates as it entertains, and while it’s geared toward a younger audience, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking and mind-expanding science fiction adventure tales. Mona Lisa's Ghost: Lucy Nightingale, Book 2 is most highly recommended.
