This is the first book in Kuang's fantasy series set in a fictional Asian empire. It started feeling very much like a typical YA fantasy adventure story but then went off in unexpectedly dark directions. The series has been nominated for a 2021 Hugo Best Series award. ( )

NOT YA - I'm not sure why people would think it is (is it because it's written by a woman of color?).

Knowing that this book is based off of very real history between China and Japan (including the Rape of Nanking), while not necessary to the enjoyment of this book, really adds some context and drives the horrors deeper.

For a debut novel, this is a dazzling feat. So much happens in this book, but it never feels rushed or overstuffed. It displays the horrors and terrors of war unflinchingly, as well as the effect that that horror has on those who've survived. (I don't normally enjoy "violent" books, but the descriptions, while terrible, are never over-the-top or too much.) And, refreshingly, there is NO romance! There's no time for that when you're in the middle of brutally fighting for your life (though I will admit, I HATED Nezha at Sinegard, and then when he and Rin were fighting back-to-back and holding an entire gate I was like "ooh, Nezha," but then he got STABBED. And somehoe survived that to reunite with Rin, but then got gassed and captured. It was a ride!). Secondary (and almost main) characters do die, and they do suffer, and they're so well-developed that you really feel sorrow for them. Rin is so single-minded and focused, that she blinds herself to everything except her loyalty to her country, even after it's rejected her. She's clearly lost and looking for something to give her purpose, latching on to whatever she can get. She makes some bad decisions, and can be frustratingly single-minded at times, but it all feels so real. She's only 16, after all, and her life has not been an easy one.

I also liked that Rin, in addition to starting way out of her depth at Sinegard (passing the test is only the first step), she didn't really know how to use/control her powers. It's incredibly realistic - she's been thrust into this position with no education and no leadership, and struggles with learning it on the fly. She's not magically this incredible weapon; she's just a girl, AND that Rin drank that weird womb-destroying potion. Having a period and cramps is a very real and repeating part of being a woman, and I appreciate that Kaung mentioned that, and made the radical choice to have Rin not even flinch at the fact that she was destroying her chance to have children.

I checked out the second on ebefore I even finished the first, so that's a good indicator of how much I liked it. ( )

With gruesome scenes and bloody wars R. F. Kuang has shown us a world of people capable of bringing down the gods to do their bidding.

"She was no victim of destiny. She was the last Speerly, commander of the Cike, and a shaman who called the gods to do her bidding.

And she would call the gods to do such terrible things."

This book is not for the light of heart( or stomach). The first part presents a deceiving beginning- from village to the most esteemed training institute of the country, Runin (Rin) fights the obstacles of the society and ranks 1 in her province for the National Keju test and reaches Sinegard.
Thats not the end of the story obviously. Thats just the beginning. The first year is fraught with racial bias, which makes Rin all the more determined to top the year. Which she does kicking ass and taking names ( literally!).
Things change towards the end of the third year.
You will have to read it yourself to find out how two warring Nations can carry on for centuries and what happens when you throw in shamans who can call down gods. ( )

★★★☆☆ (more like 3.5 rounded down)

I didn't knew what to expect but I'm really glad I bought this. The weird thing is... I get the main character's motivation but I don't want her to do it. Normally I'm all about happy happy joy joy books and this isn't rally that. But I can respect her decisions even if I'm yelling that she's too stupid to live...

IT CAME! My online bookstore said it would take 2-3 weeks but it came after one! So happy!

***WHO SUCKED ME IN AGAIN***
It was actually multiple people on YouTube but the person who made me go buy a hardcopy was Arisutocrat in their The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang | REVIEW video published on 26 may 2018.

TLDR: I respect this YouTuber opinions even when I don't agree. And she convinced me in a few minutes to buy this book.

I actually only watched a few minutes of it. She was so enthusiastic about it and I really trust her opinion. She notices things in books I never even see. But we both have the same... desire (that sounds really strange) to read good stories in which you can actually can escape to without rolling your eyes at the way characters who look like you are described in a off-putting way. I could be wrong about her intentions, I actually never had an in depth conversation with her about this, because of my lurker personality.
