A nice start to what could be nice little series ( ) This was a really lovely first installment of what will become something much larger. The plot was thick, the characters had depth, the pace was perfect and the story-telling overall was incredibly enjoyable. Blew through this one in a couple of days and would highly recommend giving it a go! Even better the second time around! Witchmark is clearly so very determined to be a charming historical-ish fantasy—one where behatted doctors ride bikes through a city that bears more than a passing resemblance to Edwardian London in the aftermath of World War One—that it seems churlish to give it a low rating. But there are simply so many technical issues here: pacing, world-building, a bland and underdeveloped romantic relationship, a bland and unconvincing main character, and a far too simplistic engagement with some really serious topics. I shouldn't find myself asking partway through a novel "wait, was this YA after all?" because of how shallow its themes are and how much the characters feel like they've been hit by the stupid stick. Where’s the world building and explanation of the magic system bro?? Lots of toxic family relationships in this and a rather bland romance. The hints we got about the different species and magic piqued my interest but nothing is elucidated about them. I was left confused over so many things. The writing was very average. I will not be continuing the series. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own. Magic marked Miles Singer for suffering the day he was born, doomed either to be enslaved to his family's interest or to be committed to a witches' asylum. He went to war to escape his destiny and came home a different man, but he couldn't leave his past behind. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after faking his own death and reinventing himself as a doctor at a cash-strapped veterans' hospital, Miles can't hide what he truly is. When a fatally poisoned patient exposes Miles' healing gift and his witchmark, he must put his anonymity and freedom at risk to investigate his patient's murder. To find the truth he'll need to rely on the family he despises, and on the kindness of the most gorgeous man he's ever seen. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
