"From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware's highly anticipated fourth novel. On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person--but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time"--… (mais)

Hal receives word that her grandmother, Hester Westaway, has passed away and she is named in the will. Hal knows that there has been some sort of mistake and that she is not the person they are looking for. Only thing is that Hal is in desperate need of some funds to get a scary loan shark off her back, so she decides to go for it and see what she can get from this will. Only things are so much more complicated than she ever could have imagined and she discovers that she does have some kind of link to this family after all. Some parts I figured out pretty early on but not everything. All in all I really enjoyed it and read through it super fast! I would give this a 3.5. ( )

I'm in a cycle where I seem to be reading about toxic families living in old houses. I enjoyed this book a lot but I think it took a little too long to get going, i.e. get to the house and the toxic family, and occasionally got a little bogged down. But overall I found it a great story with lots of twists, turns, and unexpected but logical surprises. There is an interview with the author at the end of the book and she mentions that Daphne du Maurier and Patricia Highsmith and that is good company to play in. I found our narrator to be engaging and I was rooting for her even when she was not doing the "right thing." ( )

What a great diversion during a difficult time. There is nothing like an old fashioned British drawing room like mystery to take you away ( )

Decent. Better than In A Dark Dark Wood, which was truly ridiculous. Still a bit of an annoying main character. ( )

It's ok. The reviewer who created a hilarious bingo card to play while reading a Ruth Ware novel (any Ruth Ware novel, it seems -- they all follow the same playbook ...) hit the nail on the head: remove implausible situations, unnecessary lies, characters who fluctuate wildly between taking crazy risks (the DON'T GO UP IN THE DARK ATTIC!!!! kind of risks) and being unwilling to say boo to a goose ... remove those things, and you have no novel!

However ... it was fun. Once again, like Ware's The Woman in Cabin 10 the fun seemed to tail off toward the end, as the Alert Reader's suspicions about what was going on were pretty well confirmed, and everything else began to feel like padding. I liked the use of the tarot cards, as a prop for main character Hal, and a way to focus her "reading" of the other characters' personalities and motivations. The tarot is a wonderful source of imagery and metaphor, and Ware uses it pretty well. I thought Ware took a risk with her references to Rebecca (The Big Spooky Old House that is the central to the Late Mrs. Westaways contentious will is located near Penzance, so the whole novel has various hints and winks to Rebecca.)

It just reminded me that Rebecca isn't just in another league from this -- it's on a whole different planet ... ( )
