"In the days leading up to her wedding to Darcy O'Mara, Lady Georgiana Rannoch takes on the responsibilities of a grand estate, but proving she can run a household just may be the death of her in the new Royal Spyness Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service. If only Darcy and I had eloped! What I thought would be a simple wedding has been transformed into a grand affair, thanks to the attendance of the queen, who has offered up the princesses as bridesmaids. Silly me! I thought that withdrawing from the royal line of succession would simplify my life. But before Darcy and I tie the knot in front of queen and country, we have to find a place to live as man and wife... House hunting turns out to be a pretty grim affair. Just as we start to lose hope, my globetrotting godfather offers us his fully staffed country estate. Mistress of Eynsleigh I shall be! With Darcy off in parts unknown, I head to Eynsleigh alone, only to have my hopes dashed. The grounds are in disarray and the small staff is suspiciously incompetent. Not to mention the gas tap leak in my bedroom, which I can only imagine was an attempt on my life. Something rotten is afoot--and bringing the place up to snuff may put me six feet under before I even get a chance to walk down the aisle.."-- "The latest book in Rhys Bowen's Her Royal Spyness Mysteries"--… (mais)

I enjoyed this audiobook of the 12th 'Her Royal Spyness' book more for the developments in Lady Georgiana's private life than for the mystery. The mystery aspect seemed obvious to me and Georgiana's willingness to believe whatever people told her (or at least consider that they were telling the truth) struck me as a bit hard to believe given her experiences in the first 11 books. Four Funeral and Maybe a Wedding
2.5 Stars

Unfortunately, this is the weakest installment in the series.

I am unsure whether it is the writing or the new narrator, but Georgie comes across as exceptionally elitist and snobby in this book. While Jasmine Blackborow's accents and intonation are very good, I miss the wonderfully humorous style that the late Katherine Kellgren brought to the narration. Speaking of which, there is a lovely tribute from Rhys Bowen at the beginning of the audiobook that brought tears to my eyes.

Considering the sheer number of criminal cases that Georgie has been involved in, one would think that she would have become less naive and more perceptive. This is certainly not the case here as it takes her most of the book to realize that the nefarious servants at her godfather's estate, Eynsleigh, are up to no good.

In terms of the romance, Georgie and Darcy finally tie the knot, but it is all rather anti-climactic at this point.

Overall, the absurd plot, the fade-to-black wedding night and the unremarkable narration all make for a disappointing listen. I hope the next book will be better. ( )

THIS is the book I've been waiting for. And it did not disappoint. Georgie's back and better than ever, as she tries to plan her wedding (with "suggestions" from her royal relatives), and her life post-wedding. In true Georgie fashion, trouble finds her no matter where she is, and her family and friends are dragged along for the ride.

I loved this so much. The plot was well thought-out and kept me guessing. Georgie was cleverer than in previous books, I thought, and ably navigated the mystery.

This book felt like both an ending, while keeping it open for future adventures. I am hoping to see more of Georgie.

This series is always enjoyable, even when the plots aren't as good as they could be. Luckily, even though the title is really a stretch, the plot of this one isn't. I can imagine how it might have happened back in the day of the aristocracy owning multiple estates they often didn't visit for long stretches of time.

The subplot of the book is the culmination of 11 previous books filled with the flirting and courting between Darcy and Georgie - the wedding. I was struck with trepidation at the beginning of the book as Georgie spies a pretty woman standing next to Darcy and immediately falls into a pit of despair; I dislike characters that don't embrace their own self worth. Happily, it was a fleeting scene, and the rest of the (minimal) wedding related story-line was full of delicious revenge as Georgie gets to watch her evil sister-in-law fume over Georgie's close relationship with the King and Queen. The scene where she tells Fig who her bridesmaids are was one of the best.

Overall, an enjoyable read. ( )

This book is dedicated to the memory of
Katherine Kellgren
who was the brilliant reader
of the Audible audio version of my Royal Spyness books.
She passed away far too young
Katy was beautiful, vivacious, gracious and enormously talented.
She brought every character in my books to life.
Her reading earned the books almost annual Audie nominations,
and one year she won Best Female Narrator,
beating out Meryl Streep.
I can't imagine the audiobooks without her.
