diverse teen fiction (bollywood-inspired rom com)
This is probably fine, it just wasn't what I felt like reading at the time.

A fun, light YA romance with mostly Indian-American characters. Bollywood movies (which I know almost nothing about) are heavily referenced (and reviewed at the end). Even without a lot of personal knowledge, the movie references added depth and humor to the story. Although some of the foreshadowing was a little heavy-handed, overall, the main characters are likable and I cared enough about them to find out how they were going to get a happy ending. ( )

Winnie is a huge Bollywood fan and now her life has turned into a Bollywood rom-com. Her boyfriend of three years has dumped her for another girl. How could he do that to her when he meets all the criteria that a pandit predicted her soul-mate would have? And now she still has to organize her school’s film festival with him. Awkward.

Winnie has a Bollywood movie review blog and each chapter begins with her review of a real-life Bollywood movie. There is also an appendix that lists all of the movies that Winnie refers to throughout the book. I’m looking forward to finding and watching some of the films.

My So-Called Bollywood Life was a cute, young-adult romance. It’s a little predictable but aren’t most teenage romances? It didn’t bother me – I still enjoyed the book and I really liked Dev, the third member of Winnie’s love triangle. I would have loved for him to be my high school boyfriend but he doesn’t appear to fulfill Winnie’s prophecy so she’s not sure about him.

I think most rom-com fans will like this book and if you know anything about Bollywood, then you’ll appreciate all of the movie references and enjoy it even more. ( )

Adorable.
Winnie has always grown up believing in a prophecy that was predicted when she was a child. She would meet the man she’d marry before she turned 18, his name would start with an R and he would give her a silver bracelet.

She started dating Raj when she was 14. They were together almost four years. They planned to go to film school together. He even gave her the silver bracelet.
But something changed with Raj made different plans for the future, he no longer wanted to go to film school. Now he wanted to go to an entirely different college in a different state.
He just assumed Winnie would go along.
But Whitney asks for a break to reconsider their future together. While “on a break” Raj started dating someone. Winnie felt like he was cheating and called their relationship entirely off.

But now she’s not far from her 18th birthday and she is broken up with the one she thinks she is fated to be with. And her mother thinks this too.

Winnie is feeling a loss of control in her own life. Is it just inevitable that she’ll have to get back together with Raj? Does she even want him back?
She’s questioning things even more when she starts falling for Dev.

I thought this was really cute. It was a sweet story with some adorable scenes. ( )
