"New York Times bestselling author Joel C. Rosenberg returns with a high-stakes political thriller set in Russia. Everything he learned to protect the president, he must use to take out theirs. With an American president distracted by growing tensions in North Korea and Iran, an ominous new threat is emerging in Moscow. A czar is rising in the Kremlin, a Russian president feverishly consolidating power, silencing his opposition, and plotting a brazen and lightning-fast military strike that could rupture the NATO alliance and bring Washington and Moscow to the brink of nuclear war. But in his blind spot is the former U.S. Secret Service agent, Marcus Ryker, trained to protect but ready to kill to save his country"--… (mais)

4.5 stars. Rosenberg has written another excellent thriller about an oligarch Russian President, dedicated to restoring all of the satellites for Mother Russia. Aleksandr Ivanovich Luganov, ex-KGB, rises to prime minister, when a series of apartment bombs give him the right to attack Chechen rebels, and lead to his election as President. He recruits a lawyer, Oleg Kraskin, his future son-in-law, to become a senior aides. He is horrified as Luganov plans an attack on the NATO-member Baltic countries. Meanwhile, Marcus Ryker is attending college in Colorado with his hopeful fiancée, when his stepfather threatens his mother, and Marcus kills him. When his future father-in-law tells him to stop seeing his daughter, Marcus joins the Marines following 9-11, where he distinguishes himself by saving a U.S. Senator. Upon his return to the U.S. as a hero, he joins the Secret Service, marries his sweetheart, moves to Washington along with their son. A tragedy ensues, and Marcus retires until the Senator, contemplating a Presidential candidacy, asks him to protect him on a trip to the Europe. Oleg and Marcus separately decide that Luganov must be stopped at all costs. Gripping, scary, and realistic portrayal of world leaders, recommended. ( )

The first part of the book was really good. There's something a bit off on the conversation -- I never quite got used to the author's style, and it seems a bit stilted with the "he said", "he responded" stuff -- but I was enjoying it. But, the end required such a suspension of disbelief...it jarred me right out of the story. ( )

I love Joel Rosenberg books and I think he's one of the most gifted thriller writers. As I read I noticed the author had put a great deal of effort to introduced Marcus Ryker and his background so I'm hoping there will be perhaps book two. I wouldn't say this was my favorite book of his but it was a very thrilling read nonetheless. ( )

This is the first of a trilogy. It is a story of two men, one American and one Russian and how their lives are intertwined. Marcus marries his grade school/jurnior high/high school sweetheart. His professional career consists of being in the military and then the secret service. Oleg marries Marina, the Russian President's daughter. He rapidly ascends in his father in law's cabinet.
Rosenberg does an outstanding job using fictional characters and events, but interweaving them into some true events giving the book a realistic feel ( )

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.
Marcus Ryker is a Secret Service Agent, serving his country in this way after leaving the military a decorated hero. He loves his job and travels all over the globe, but it takes him away from his wife and young son all too often. Tragedy strikes Marcus, causing him to resign his position. He now works odd jobs at his church and meets with the pastor weekly. He is repairing the roof when he is summoned to the pastor’s office. He meets someone from his past who is in the political arena and wants Marcus to go with him on a trip to the Baltics. Marcus has vast experience in security for VIPs, but he has no interest in going on the trip. He is soon convinced by a friend and former soldier who served with Marcus to go on the trip. Once he arrives, his training takes over as an imminent threat to the United States and her people is uncovered. Marcus steps up to serve his country again.
Oleg Kraskin who lives in Russia. He is a lawyer who has married the daughter of the Russian president. He is given a job as part of the president’s staff taking notes and transcribing them. He does a good job and works his way up the ladder to become a trusted advisor/counselor to the president himself. He, like Marcus, spends a lot of time away from his family in service to his country. Oleg spends some years obeying the president, who is also his father-in-law. Oleg learns all is not as it appears to be behind the scenes. What is told to the public and what the reality is are two different things.
Wow! This was one terrific story! It took a little bit of time for me to get involved in the story as they author spent time telling the history of the two main characters, but I kept reading as I knew my efforts would be rewarded. I stayed up late into the night to finish it. I thought the characters very believable and realistic. The writing was excellent. The tension wound up to a high level and kept me there, even at the end. The two main characters each have difficult choices to make and must wrestle with what they feel is the right thing to do. This one is going on the “keeper shelf” for sure! I can’t wait for this author’s next book due out this month! ( )
