I enjoyed the other installments in Kendare Blake's Three Dark Crowns series enough to preorder this novella, and I'm not sure that I regret that I spent the money. This was an interesting little installment in the story of the three queens, and a nice amount of background that fleshed out and clarified a couple of things that the first two books revealed but didn't get into in great depth. On the other hand, while I enjoyed reading this novella, I can't say that it added anything concrete to my knowledge of the situation. It added depth, but I'm honestly not sure that this was a necessary installment of the story. If you're just dying for a little more of this universe, by all means read it. It's well-written and entertaining. But I don't know that you'll really learn anything you didn't already know. I, personally, found this to be ultimately unsatisfying. HTML: In this must-read prequel to Kendare Blake's New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, the queens' origin story is revealed. It's a pre-crown lowdown of Fennbirn's ruling class. Mirabella, Arsinoe, and Katharine weren't always scheming to murder each other. They weren't always surrounded by rival foster families, each swearing to have their best interests at heart. And they weren't always afraid of being unexpectedly attackedâ??by one of their own sisters, no lessâ??in a way that could cost them their last breath. They used to be together. Just three sisters. Alone in a glen. This is the story of the three queensâ??after they were born, before they were separated, during the time when they all lived together, loved each other, and protected each other. Even as children, their personalities were starting to emergeâ??Mirabella was the responsible eldest; Arsinoe, the wild spitfire; and Katharine, the obedient youngest. It's also the story of the day they were torn apart, and the several years that follow. From birth to eleven years old, this is a rare glimpse of the queens' lives...before they were at stake. Don't miss any of the Three Dark Crowns books, including Five Dark Fates, the thrilling conclusion to the series! Want to read more about Fennbirn's history? Kendare Blake keeps finding new ways to thrill me with these three little queens. I really liked the back stories of this novella. It was very enlightening to see things that happened behind the scenes to set up the books I already love. Spoiler Alert: do not read this book first as it does have spoilers! ( )
