Reminiscent of the bestsellers of Laura Lippman and Harlan Coben--with a dose of Big Little Lies or Stranger Things--an absorbing, addictive tale of psychological suspense from the author of the highly acclaimed and Edgar Award-nominated What Remains of Me and the USA Today bestselling and Shamus Award-winning Brenna Spector series, in which a seemingly open-and-shut police case with a clear-cut hero and villain turns out to be anything but simple.Late one night in the quiet Hudson Valley town of Havenkill, a distraught woman stumbles into the police station--and lives are changed forever. Aimee En, once a darling of the '80s pop music scene, claims that a teenage boy stole her car, then ran over another young man who'd rushed to help. As Liam Miller's life hangs in the balance, the events of that fateful night begin to come into focus. But is everything as it seems? The case quickly consumes social media, transforming Liam, a local high school football star, into a folk hero, and the suspect, a high school outcast named Wade Reed, into a depraved would-be killer. But is Wade really guilty? And if he isn't, why won't he talk?Told from a kaleidoscope of viewpoints--Wade's mother Jackie, his younger brother Connor, Aimee En and Pearl Maze, a young police officer with a tragic past, If I Die Tonight is a story of family ties and dark secrets--and the lengths we'll go to protect ourselves.… (mais)

Awful. It has adult themes but is written with 7th grade English. The social media references already feel uncomfortably dated, like they were written by someone who is very far removed from how teenagers interact. The plot is okay, but nothing compared to a Gillian Fylnn or Paula Hawkins novel. The characters felt shallow and unrealistic. Was hoping for a thriller that I couldn't put down, but ended up with one that I read very quickly just to get it over with. ( )

I didn't plan to read If I Die Tonight in one sitting, but once I started it, I simply couldn't put it down. The prologue hooked me immediately with a Facebook post from 17 year old Wade that tells the reader 'By the time you read this, I'll be dead.' This suicide post was so sad and heartfelt that I just had to devour every single page to find out how Wade was left feeling this way.

Wade's post mentioned 'memory gifts' and I thought that was such a beautiful way to refer to a special memory. One that we treasure so much that we wrap it up, tie it with a ribbon and store it in a special part of our brain until we're feeling low and need to unwrap the gift to rediscover our happy feelings from that time. I'm going to remember that description (no pun intended).

Wade's schoolfriend, Liam Miller, was killed in an apparent car-jacking. The only witness is the car's owner: a has-been rock star, Aimee-En, who seems to be hiding something. Wade is also acting suspiciously and it's noticed by his Mom, Jackie and younger brother, Connor. When Wade can't account for his whereabouts on the night Liam was killed, even Jackie starts to think that Wade might be guilty. Mob mentality goes into overdrive when the townsfolk pick up on Wade's lack of alibi and they delight in finding someone to blame. The reader is a little more forgiving as they are allowed to piece together all of the pieces of the puzzle before the truth is revealed.

I found it so interesting to see how easily people jump to conclusions. I'm not saying I'm never guilty of this, but most of the time I do tend to look for all of the facts before making a decision - it's probably because I have read so many crime books! The book also highlighted the effects of social media and how people can be so vicious when hiding behind a screen.

There are a lot of characters in If I Die Tonight so I sometimes found it confusing and didn't know who was who. I picked up the main characters easily enough but sometimes had to flick back over the pages when a minor character reappeared. That's the only real criticism I had but it's what makes this addictive and suspenseful book a four star rather than a five star read for me.

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion. ( )

4.5 stars.

Opening with a heart wrenching prologue, If I Die Tonight by Alison Gaylin is a spellbinding mystery about a carjacking that leads to the hit and run of a popular high school student.

Jackie Reed is a single mom raising her two sons, seventeen year old Wade and thirteen year old Connor, in the small town of Havenkill, NY. Over the past several months, Wade has drastically changed and he is now secretive and a bit of a loner. Despite these changes in her son, Jackie has complete confidence her son would not do anything to harm anyone. However, suspicion falls on Wade following the carjacking that leaves her son's classmate, popular and well-liked Liam Miller in a coma. Jackie never wavers in her faith that Wade has nothing to do with what happened to Liam, but the other people in their small town are not as willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Police Officer Pearl Maze is on duty the night Amy Nathanson, a washed up musician, reports her vintage Jaguar has been carjacked. She is also a witness in the accident in which Liam was struck by the car thief, but Pearl has doubts about her story. When Pearl uncovers information that proves her intuition is correct, Amy revises her explanation, but is she telling the truth?

Jackie's belief in Wade is never shaken but she is frustrated by his refusal to tell her where he was the night of Liam's accident. She is already concerned by a puzzling text that was sent to him but she also wants to respect his privacy. But as the situation becomes more dire since everyone in town is out of blood and Wade is the easiest target, will Jackie try to find answers to the questions that are troubling her about her son?

Younger brother Connor is also deeply affected by the unfolding events. The antipathy toward Wade spills over onto Connor and he is forced to deal with bullies and out of control gossip fueled by social media. He wants to protect his brother and when he becomes a social pariah, Connor makes a decision that he immediately regrets but is unable to take back.

Written from multiple points of view, If I Die Tonight is a slow burning yet incredibly engrossing mystery. The characters are richly developed and multi-dimensional. The storyline is quite riveting and realistic. While some elements are somewhat easy to figure out, Alison Gaylin does an outstanding job keeping the truth about who is responsible for what happened to Liam and the perpetrator's identity cleverly under wraps until the novel's conclusion. A suspenseful and fascinating novel that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. ( )

This was an excellent book - I rated it 4 stars because it was just a bit slow for me to get into but once I did - it was difficult to put down. This book is about a young man accused of killing another young man. It deals with an individual and his family being harassed via social media and in person and the resulting consequences. An excellent and timely book. I look forward to reading more books by this author. ( )

Thrillers are not really my forte, but there have been a few that I've liked. This isn't one of them. I didn't find the plot compelling. All that melodrama.

'If I Die Tonight' begins with a message from high school outcaste Wade Reed saying he's gonna end it all and you'll all be better of without me. Hundreds of 'likes' support the post. Flashing back we find there's been an accident. An 80s has-been musician has been robbed of her purse and her car stolen. A local football hero was hit by the car in the aftermath and is in critical condition in the hospital. Blame soon falls on Wade, a weird kid and not much liked who was out that night without an alibi. Pearl, a cop with a dark secret, has a bad feeling about the witnesses and doubts about the suspect, but the community doesn't hesitate to make judgements.

Gaylin does demonstrate effectively how social media can be the most destructive influence on communities. Her characters, with the critical exception of Wade our maligned prime suspect, are well drawn. Wade and his silence was just not believable. It was too visible of a plot mechanism. I did like Pearl and Wade's mother, they managed to give life to the book.

Anyway, it was quick and there's worse out there. ( )
