Navigating their burned-out, futuristic city home under constant threat from a pair of dragons circling the skies, three young people are forced to flee and confront challenges ranging from fire and conspiracies to taboo drugs and dragon-worshippers."In the burned-out, futuristic city of Empire Island, three young people navigate a crumbling metropolis constantly under threat from a pair of dragons that circle the skies. When violence strikes, reality star Duncan Humphrey Ripple V, the spoiled scion of the metropolis' last dynasty; Baroness Swan Lenore Dahlberg, his tempestuous, death-obsessed betrothed; and Abby, a feral beauty he discovered tossed out with the trash; are forced to flee everything they've ever known. As they wander toward the scalded heart of the city, they face fire, conspiracy, mayhem, unholy drugs, dragon-worshippers, and the monsters lurking inside themselves. In this bombshell of a novel, Chandler Klang Smith has imagined an unimaginable world: scathingly clever and gorgeously strange, The Sky Is Yours is at once faraway and disturbingly familiar, its singular chaos grounded in the universal realities of love, family, and the deeply human desire to survive at all costs."--… (mais)

I thought I would love this book. I didn't.

I enjoyed the worldbuilding and the writing style, and sometimes the humor.

At first, I enjoyed the fact that the main characters were so unlikeable, who doesn't love a good redemption/taking responsibility for yourself and other people arc?

The problem was - there was no arc. The characters didn't develop, so they just got annoying over time. They rarely acted on their own, mostly things just happened to them and they stood there and took it and did NOT develop because of it.

The book does not seem to know what it wants to be or could not decide. For a dystopian story, there's too little worldbuilding, for a coming-of-age story there's too little character development, for a political story there's too little politics, for a fantasy story there's too little adventure and, unfortunately, for a good story there's no story arc and no real conclusion. It's just a string of random events, not really epic, but at the same time not really personal. ( )

This is an imaginative romp of a book. Picture a teenage version of Coraline having an arranged with a young boy who has a feral girl as a pet. Add some dragons and kooky relatives, hostile home invaders, firefighters, etc. My only problem is the story is too convoluted. It could do with serious editing to cut down on the wordiness and tangential storylines. ( )

I can not start to describe The Sky Is Yours, but I'm sure it will end up on my most talked out list for sure. Dragons (who seem to just be there) have taken over Empire Island and the surviving humans try to make the best of it run either by the super-rich or the mafia. Amidst all this, Duncan and Swanny prepare their forced marriage. And then, hell breaks lose.

I feel conflicted about The Sky Is Yours. At first, I didn't know what to think about it, and honestly, I was having some trouble to keep my attention focused on the book. Duncan and Swanny are both rather flawed characters, which made them interesting and a little bit annoying at the same time, but I couldn't figure out what kind of book it wanted to be (after reading all of it, I'm still not sure).

What I can say though is that it is unlike any of the other Dystopian or dragon filled books that I've read, and I've read quite a few. This is one of those books I can only classify as genre-defying. Is it all good? No, there are quite a few stereotypes being played out and some of it is just a bit too much. Would I recommend it? That's a difficult one, since it certainly isn't for everyone, however it had something of a fresh tone (that we so desperately need in the Dystopian scene) so I'm looking forward to Chandler Klang Smith's next work.

Thanks to Blogging for Books and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! ( )

Interesting, bizarre, memorable. Unclear about symbolism or greater meaning to the story. ( )

I honestly don't know how I feel about this book. It was extremely unique, to say the least. It took me a while to read this book, because it was so strange that I found it hard to really get into. That being said, though, I do appreciate how singular this story is - I've never read anything like it before and I can't imagine there's a similar story anywhere out there. Most of the characters were just a bit too unlikable for me, but I did enjoy Hooli, the rat, and Abby and their interactions. If you're looking for a very unique, very odd story, this will definitely fit the bill. I would recommend at least giving it a try, because it's a cool experience to read something so out-of-the-box and different. Thanks to First to Read for the advance copy. ( )
