A quick and delightful account of the road that led to the Austrian defeat and Prussian triumph at Königgrätz in 1866. Bismarck was a dangerous if masterful gambler who understood the importance of timing. Again and again, he managed to unfreeze structures to force a decision he liked and refreeze it again before his enemies realized their peril. He remained one or two loops ahead of the Austrian, French and minor German decision loops. They could only react and often chose bad options. In hindsight, the Austrians might even have won the battle of Königgrätz had they made better use of their resources. World history would have been very different if Bismarck had been forced into exile (with the cash he had taken out of the bank prior to Königgrätz for just such a case).
