Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy himand face the consequences.
In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I didn't like how it was really slow at the beginning and when the action started to happen it just felt a little rushed to me. However, the banter between characters and the characters themselves were amazing. I also LOVED the ending of this book. I love books that end in betrayal and this one was written perfectly in my opinion. ( )

I've said this many times, but I should not be allowed to keep reading books with Fae in them! The plot, although went fast, worked so well! The characters, the twists and turns worked so well.

I cannot believe it took me this long actually to open this book and fall in love. This is such an incredible story and world. And let's be honest, folks, Cardan is the bad boy of all of our dreams. ( )

The story was about royal politics, political intrigue, trust, betrayal, family drama, deception, magic, desire, and cruelty.

Characters were complex and interesting. They were all flawed and no one was perfect, even Jude who I liked from the beginning. It was hard to predict anything about any characters until I was much into book but I was right about who was good and who was bad. It was secrets characters were keeping and their actions surprised me most.

The world was interesting and captivating. It wasn’t described in too much detail that would made it perfect for readers who don’t like info dump.

Court politics and political intrigue were the main focus of the book and it was the best part.

Why 4 or 4.5 stars –

There wasn’t anything wrong with the book. We still need to see character development which might be in next books. Also, I don’t like the cliche of ‘bad boy is actually good’ and ‘boy acting ridiculously jerk just because he didn’t like how he felt around girl’.

Overall, Cruel Prince was dark, twisted, fascinating and fast paced YA fantasy with complex and interesting plot and characters.

I definitely recommend if you like,
dark fantasy
YA fantasy with violence
complex plot and characters
fascinating twisted faerie world
bad boy is actually good arc
possible enemies-to-lovers arc
strong female character
Less focus on romance
royal politics and political intrigue ( )

Written clearly for a teenage crowd, I’m usually attracted to the fantasy but turned off by the immaturity. For some reason I found myself INVESTED though.
Jude is immature and impossibly (unbelievably) resilient and by the end, I wasn’t even sure whether she was a “good guy”. In fact, most of the characters blur the line between good and evil and don’t care whether you like them or not.
It managed to surprise me with a twist and left me wanting the rest of the story, thoroughly confusing my reading tastes. ( )

4.5 stars, review to come.

--

I have to admit, I am still waffling between 4 and 4.5 stars for this one. This was my FIRST Holly Black Book, and it took me a good third to really get into the story. For the first part, I didn't find that much happened beyond a bunch of schoolyard bullying... which, if I'm reading about a fairy world, shouldn't there be more interesting things going on??

HOWEVER, things do heat up, and when the proverbial s**t hits the fan... damn. This book gets dark and bloody FAST. (I questioned a few times whether this should really be considered YA? Some scenes truly are not for the squeamish... but I loved it hahaha).

Once things started to speed up, I couldn't put the book down. I became wrapped up in the mystery, and what was to become of Jude. Speaking of Jude, I loved her as the heroine(?)... if you could call her that. Many of the choices and actions she takes definitely put her in a morally gray realm. But it was really refreshing to see a female lead like that in a YA novel. There is kind of a romance in here, but I'm not sure yet how I feel about it. We'll see where book two takes us.

Another thing I must mention loving THROUGHOUT this book was the atmosphere. I felt like I should be hiding away in a secret bramble while reading this. But seriously - the smells, the place, the tastes; just the way Black describes things put you right in this magical forested realm.

All in all, I definitely plan to read book two, and might check out some more Holly Black books when I can. ( )
