In the Hamptons, the everyday people are as complicated and fascinating as the millionaires... When Katie Doyle moves across the country to the Hamptons, she is hoping for summer employment, new friends for her young son, and a chance to explore a new love affair with a dazzling investor. What she finds is a strange cocktail of classes, where society's one-percenters vacation alongside local, hard-working people who've lived in the Hamptons for generations. Though she's looking forward to their move, Katie is wary about mingling with her boyfriends' East Coast elite circles. She soon discovers Southampton isn't all that it seems to be on the surface--and neither are the people who live there. As George takes Katie on a whirlwind tour of country clubs, haute couture, and lavish events, she is amazed to witness sudden whims become dire needs, extra-marital affairs blossoming right and left, and people purchase friends and loyalties like a pair of shoes. Even the middle-class townspeople maintain a determined façade while maneuvering like sharks among the wealthy summer invaders. The more Katie becomes immersed, the more she learns the secrets of both the upstairs and downstairs, the upper crust and middle of the road. The combustion between the classes becomes explosive as the summer tears on. Betrayals, a sexual predator, and a missing person lost in murky waves drive the listener on a racing Learjet ride through impossible twists and turns until landing at the shocking conclusion. When she meets Luke, a local surfer and middle school teacher, he makes her question what it is she really wants as she understands the life she's begun for herself is built on shifting Hamptons' dunes.… (mais)

“They radiated that orgasm-free lifestyle so unique and universal among Seabrook women.”
― Holly Peterson, It Happens in the Hamptons

DNF.

I had liked the beginning and had thought a book about the Hamptons would be fun. I spaced out about a quarter of the way through and was not able to continue.

Maybe if I had read this at the beach, drinking a Margarita, sun melting down it would have been different.

Ultimately I think this book is made for what I described above. It did not hook me in though. Disappointing. ( )

Quick one day read. Still trying to figure out what all the hype was about. I thought it was boring and predictable. ( )

A very light summer read. I had hoped for much more, so was a little disappointed in the whole story. ( )

It wasn't quite what I had in mind. I absolutely went into this one with certain ideas. I was more hoping for something fun like Royal Pains. Does anyone reading this review have any recommendations of books that remind them of light, summer, beach time like Royal Pains?

Back to my review, single mom Katie moves to Southampton for the summer after her potential boyfriend George extends the invitation to use his cottage for the summer.

She accepts the invitation but remains cautious of a relationship with George. He seems nice and she is attracted to him but he is very distant. He pretty much only plans to come out on the weekends to see Katie and he usually stays in another cottage with his mom when he's in town.

All of this is done under the guise of giving Katie the space "she needs" that she never asked for. She might be a bit suspicious of George. I think most people would be suspicious of George.

Spoilers aside, there is a creepy guy hanging around Southampton (successfully) trying to pick up the teenage girls.
I was reluctant to read this book at first thinking it might be violent when they used the term predator on the book flap.
While that term is accurate, he is not violent.
I thought I'd clarify that in case it concerned anyone else.

I enjoyed the characters and I always enjoy a beach setting. But I didn't love the storyline. It wasn't a good fit for me. It kind of walked the line between serious and light and I can't tell which way it was supposed to be leaning. ( )
