"A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author--an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magic, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives... It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed--and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river--or in the ones you know and love the most. As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive"--… (mais)

Ugh. The male characters all sounds exactly the same, excepting one that has an accent. There's no personality. I'm also pretty annoyed this plot went so quickly to "Americans have to figure out how to survive without shopping". How dreary and boring. ( )

I received this book free from the publisher at Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

A very very boring and disappointing book. Starts in a kind of a world where humanity as you know it is dying. Yuck!! Why would i want to read that unless its really well written and the story engages you in such a way that you actually feel the story. Not so here. I was about 20% into the book and seriously thinking of just leaving the book. Kept thinking its Nora Roberts. Cant be that bad. Yes there are parts where the story did pick up and gets almost interesting and then again the really boring stuff comes. The ending , last 10-15% was again kind of bad. Books where first 20% is super engaging, end is super engaging and the middle the story gets a little lost i feel might still work. But this one if the other way . First 20% super bad, middle king of ok, last 15% meh. Do not think i will be reaching out for the other books in the Chronicles of The One series ( )

I didn't know what to expect going in to this one. All I knew was it was Nora, it was different and it was dark and it was different fantasy than she normally does. And then I got hooked. Quickly. This is Nora Roberts as we know her but 1000x better. She seemed to cast off the formulaic qualities of her past few magic trilogies and managed to create a new world. Literally. Sure I saw a couple of things coming but there were many more that blindsided me and I was not prepared. Like at all.

I started this book last night and read until I couldn't anymore. And then I tried to go to sleep and all I could think about was why am I not finishing this book. And then I crammed in everything I could before I came to work where I on the sly read the final 6% because I had to know.

I think that the ending was a bit "whomp whomp" which is definitely a Nora thing. She isn't always the best with sticking the ending. But I also think she was setting it up for the next book so I forgive her. I need the next book now. Thank you Nora for giving me what I consider your best work since [b:The Witness|12716613|The Witness|Nora Roberts|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1329921937l/12716613._SY75_.jpg|17851429] It's been a long time coming and you finally delivered. I couldn't do it. I got to page 157 and couldn't make myself finish it. I didn't care about any of its characters. That faerie is irritating. The plot is a mish-mash of several sub-genres and not particularly clever. The writing is not very good.

I like Nora Robert's alter-ego J.D. Robb, and her Death series is an enjoyable bit of fluff. This isn't.

BTW, this is only my opinion. I have no problem with other people enjoying this book (trilogy). Good thing too, since so many readers love it. ( )
