More Penric and Desdemoma. What more could you want? Bit shorter than the other three, but closes out the story of Penric's Mission very nicely. ( )

Bujold, Lois McMaster. Mira’s Last Dance. Penric and Desdemona No. 4 (pub order). Spectrum Literary Agency, 2017.
I found the first few Penric and Desdemona books quite engaging, but this one fell a little flat for me. Mira was never as much fun as she was cracked up to be, and Penric’s two traveling companions were never brought to life as most of Bujold’s characters are. There was some fun in watching Penric travel in drag, but it was not enough to sustain even a short novella like this one. I know that not raving about a Bujold piece is like saying Meryl Streep or Daniel Day Lewis gave a bad performance, but still . . . ( )

Light fun, maybe less impressive than the rest of the Penric novellas, but this one has more of one thing than all the others combined. Boobs.

It was very funny, and even though it's basically a direct follow up from Penric's Mission, still a roadtrip novel, it was a delight just for seeing Penric have to cross-dress. :)

That's what you get when one of your ten demons was a courtesan! The poor boy never stands a chance. :) ( )

Perhaps the lightest of the Penric books, all the urgency is pending or mistaken as Penric continues to accompany the fleeing Cedonian ex-general and his widowed sister, and manages to further complicate his relationship with the latter by the ruse of passing as the courtesan Mira, one of Desdemona's former riders. Mira's Last Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold is a Penric and Desdemona novella set in the World of the Five Gods. It is a direct sequel to Penric's Mission, which I have previously read and reviewed, and hence the blurb below contains spoilers for that earlier story.

I bought Mira's Last Dance during a book slump and devoured it in less than 24 hours. Since it has been more than two years since I read the immediate prequel, Penric's Mission, it took me a little while to remember who the persisting side characters were. But it came back to me soon enough and the book was an entertaining read even before that. I do, generally speaking, recommend reading Penric's Mission before Mira's Last Dance, and probably also Penric's Demon, which sets up the whole concept of the novella series. However, you do not need to have read any of the novels in the World of the Five Gods — indeed, I haven't and I've been enjoying the Penric and Desdemona books just fine.

In this story, we see Penric escorting/delivering the two people we met in the previous novella to the city they were trying to reach. Of course, they run into troubles along the way, the most memorable of which requires Penric to call on the skills of one of Desdemona's previous possessed humans, Mira. Hence the title.

Mira's Last Dance was entertaining, a bit introspective and overall a good diversion. I recommend it to fans of Bujold's work and the other Penric and Desdemona books, with the prequel-reading caveat above. I plan to pick up the direct sequel, The Prisoner of Limnos, immediately.

"Something I did not know at twenty," said Nikys slowly, "that I do know at thirty, is that when a woman marries a man, she marries his life. And it had better be the life she wants to lead."
