This book is pure joy. It has been a simple, blissful, joyous journey for me.
The book comprises of no major dramas or complex tragedies of classic literature.
I think it's the simplicity of the book that made it a masterpiece.

Like so many people, I loved this book as a kid. Good news, I still love it! I was a "Jo" (who wasn't?) but my appreciation for the other girls has increased magnificently, helped along by Greta Gerwig's immaculate adaptation. Will admit I cried multiple times.

I know lots of people find this book saccharine, preachy, or boring. I don't know what I would think of it if I was reading it for the first time now, but as it is I find it infinitely human, often funny, and touching in the precise specificity of its character's interior lives. My additional knowledge of Louisa May Alcott's life has only enriched my reading, and while I don't think I'll ever go on to the sequels, I'm happy to know the March family is always waiting for me here. Who knew mundane life could be so entertaining. I have to confess that the only reason why I picked this up was because I knew a movie was coming out. Having said that I’m really happy that I did.

We follow Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March as they navigate through life in the 1800’s. We get to know them and their very different characters. We have Meg who is trying to be an older sister and a loving wife. Tom boyish Jo who’s only real dream is to be an author one day. Beth is a shy girl but that doesn’t stop her from being the kindest girl in the neighborhood. Amy is always involved with more than she can chew on. We follow these little women as they make their way from being a little girl to a young woman.

First of all, I’m not the biggest fan of “classics”. Having said that I adored this so much. I think it’s a great example how life can change and that every time period is worth writing down. The real power lays in the mundane. Basically, if you strip it down you follow a couple of characters with not that much going on. The treasure is that you come to care for the time period and these characters. You’ll want to know how a simple problem is handled and what kind of things these girls have to do just to stay alive. Controversial to many my favorite character was Amy. Her character arc was just unbelievable and I feel like she was the one who did a full 180 but all while still staying true to herself. As to way this isn’t a 5-star read, I can only say that the novel could be a little bit preaching some times. although it’s a story for young children I feel like some of the lessons were a bit too visible and clear. I think the message would still have come across if it wasn’t as neatly presented as it was.

For everyone. That just wants to escapes to a different time this is a great read and you’ll definitely fall in love with one of the sisters.

I actually found this book quite delightful, except from the many pop culture references I spent much of the second half waiting for the inevitable death of Beth, only to discover that’s actually in another book! ( )

Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy are home with their mother, Marmee, while their father is serving as a chaplain the Civil War. These episodic chapters tell of their everyday trials and tribulations, fun and joys, as they strive to become better people and grow into young women.

This classic hardly needs an introduction, right? My first foray was actually one of those Illustrated Classics that was much abridged and had a drawing on every other page. I still have a lot of fondness for the story, for all its moralizing, and found that a lot of Marmee's precepts had wormed their way into a lot of my own thinking. As a classic, I think it would still hold appeal to some readers, as while details have changed certainly the challenges of growing up, trying to be good, and dealing with friends and family are still very much the same. Between Meg and Marmee:

"He's away all day, and at night when I want to see him, he is continually going over to the Scotts'. It isn't fair that I should have the hardest work, and never any amusement. Men are very selfish, even the best of them."
"So are women. Don't blame John till you see where you are wrong yourself." (Chapter 38, Gutenberg.org edition)
Gentlemen, which means boys, be courteous to the old maids, no matter how poor and plain and prim, for the only chivalry worth having is that which is the readiest to pay deference to the old, protect the feeble, and serve womankind, regardless of rank, age, or color. (Chapter 43, Gutenberg.org edition)

This LT work is the complete, unabridged Little Women , containing both Part First (originally published in 1868) and Part Second (published in 1869). American editions almost always contain both parts. UK and European editions frequently contain only Part First, with Part Second being published separately as Good Wives. If you are not sure which version you have, check the table of contents. Part First ends with Chapter 23, "Aunt March Settles the Question." Part Second ends with the chapter entitled "Harvest Time". Please do not combine with editions that contain only Little Women: Part I., or with any abridgments, adaptations, or film versions.
