Book 1 in the Chain of Charms series, a brilliant new adventure series set amongst the gypsies of Cromwell's England. From the bestselling author of the Witches of Eileanan series. Once there was a gypsy queen who wore on her wrist a chain of six lucky charms - a golden crown, a silver horse, a butterfly caught in amber, a cat's eye shell, a bolt of lightning forged from the heart of a falling star, and the flower of the rue plant, herb of grace. The queen gave each of her six children one of the charms as their lucky talisman, but ever since the chain of charms was broken, the gypsies had been dogged with misfortune. Book 1: The Gypsy Crown: 9th August - 12th August 1658. Maggie has given them the first charm - an old gold coin - but Luka and Emilia must escape the brutal thief-taker, Coldham. With a horse, a monkey, a dog, and a huge brown bear in their train, it is hard to travel secretly as they flee across the Surrey countryside. With a little bit of luck - or, as Emilia believes, magic - they manage to escape, but Coldham will not give up so easily.… (mais)

This is the first book in a series of six.

It is the story of two gypsy families meeting to come to a marriage agreement for two of their teenagers. After the deal is made, one family heads off to a nearby town to sing and dance to help raise the dowry and are charged with a number of things including murder! All except two youngsters are imprisoned (two cousins who are 13 year olds and manage to escape). Their names are Luka and Emilia. It’s up to these two to find help and free the rest of the family before they are sent to the gallows.

An enjoyable book for younger readers, with a bit of historical value as well. There’s plenty of action and adventure. The reader will learn about life in the 1600s too. It’s a well written first book in the series. I’ll be reading the rest of the series. ( )

Not a bad book, but I didn't feel it was able to bridge the age gap. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it isn't trying to be anything other than a children's book, but it meant I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected.

That said, I thought the historical aspect was quite well done and I would certainly recommend it to any children interested in "the olden days". (Or any children that you want to trick into learning history.) ( )

The first few pages of this book contain an excellent synopsis of the history of England from the civil war of 1642 involving the Cavaliers and Roundheads to Roundhead Oliver Cromwells victory in 1644 and his dictatorship from 1653 where he banned singing and dancing and most sports. This is the first book in 'The Chain of Charms' series. Set in seventeenth-century England, gypsy cousins Emilia and Luka are travelling with their family. They reach a town where they hope to earn some money performing but unfortunately the group is arrested, jailed, and then sentenced to hang by the Puritans. Cousins Emilia and Luka are the only ones able to escape. Luka wants to gather Gypsy relatives to lay siege to the prison, while Emilia hopes to locate the charms that Baba has predicted will bring back the Gypsy's good luck. The charms were broken long ago by a Gypsy matriarch who gave one charm to each of her five children which has been blamed for the bad luck that seems to follow the Gypsy's. The start of a good series. ( )

This is an exciting story about a family of Gypsies living in Britain during the rule of Oliver Cromwell. The family is looking forward to celebrating the marriage of Beatrice, but before they can raise the dowry, most of the family is captured by the Puritans and thrown in gaol. It is almost certain that they will be hanged.

Two of the children escape and return to their camp to try to save their Grandmother, Maggie. Maggieexplains that she is too old to run and tells a tale of how misfortune fell upon the Romany people after a chain of charms was divided between seven Gypsy tribes of Britain. Maggie sets the children the dangerous quest to re-unite the charms and break the curse.

The Gypsy Crown is the first part of the quest. It is an exciting book that will have the reader clamouring to read the subsequent books in the series.

There is an interesting section at the back of the book explaining the real events and characters that lived at that time.
