"A dazzlingly accomplished debut collection explores the ties that bind parents and children, husbands and wives, lovers and friends to one another and to the places they call home. In "Who Will Greet You at Home," a National Magazine Award finalist for The New Yorker, A woman desperate for a child weaves one out of hair, with unsettling results. In "Wild," a disastrous night out shifts a teenager and her Nigerian cousin onto uneasy common ground. In "The Future Looks Good," three generations of women are haunted by the ghosts of war, while in "Light," a father struggles to protect and empower the daughter he loves. And in the title story, in a world ravaged by flood and riven by class, experts have discovered how to "fix the equation of a person" - with rippling, unforeseen repercussions. The fragments of the lives presented in the book show the relationships between people, most often between daughters and their mothers. In showing just these little fragments of their lives, we see how the relationships have come to be the way they are, but are rarely shown how they end up, with the stories dangling. While I would have liked to see how these stories ended, I think the decision to cut them short was helpful for the purpose of showing continuing journeys and that the story doesn't have to end with brokenness, that there is always space and time to restore. I really loved some of the stories and others (literally) put me to sleep. But the last 2-3 stories would have been 5 stars, easily. I really loved the volcano one, even though it's not the kind of story I would ordinarily pick up. ( )

These fierce, vivid stories are well-crafted without ever feeling constructed. Arimah gives readers access to the core emotional struggle of her characters, making us complicit in the impossible decisions they face. ( )

A weird mix of contemporary stories of nigerian and american culture, with a couple of strange sf tales thrown in for good measure - the titular story being one of them, and perhaps the best in the book.

Perhaps I need more nigerian cultural background, but few of these stories had any appeal or connection for me. They're mostly about daughters seeking to either impress or reject their mothers, and fathers who don't support them. America is often held up as an ideal destination until the girls get there, to discover it's much like anywhere else, but without the sense of family and community that they've known in africa. ( )

One of the pleasures of reading Lesley Nneka Arimah’s debut collection is the feeling of being thrown off balance: not knowing where this playful and adventurous new talent will take you next. The 12 stories that make up What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky are set in Nigeria and the US, sometimes moving between the two (the author was born in the UK, has lived in Nigeria and is now based in the States). Arimah’s focus is on the lives of girls and women, and while her perspective is often bleak, the collection is bracing and varied.
