If You Desire
3.5 Stars

Like his brothers, Court and Ethan, Hugh MacCarrick lives under a curse that places the only woman he has ever loved in mortal danger. For this reason, he has always avoided Jane Weyland even though he desires her above all else. But now a dangerous enemy has targeted Jane, and Hugh is the only one who can protect her.

Although Jane is a huge improvement over the heroine in the first book, she still comes across as a spoiled little rich girl who is used to getting her own way and is not above manipulation and trickery to get it. That said, she does grow on you and it is difficult not to appreciate her courage and willingness to adapt to every circumstance.

Hugh is not as rough around the edges as Court and his non-existent social skills are actually quite charming. Nevertheless, his morose and broody personality can get a little tedious at times.

The villain is an interesting character and proves to be a formidable foe. However, even though he poses a tangible threat, the actual suspense plot takes a back seat to Jane and Hugh’s angst ridden relationship.

Ethan’s book is next and I’m really looking forward to it as I have a real soft spot for scarred heroes. ( )

Loving the heroine with a soul deep and all consuming passion but knowing that the curse shadowing his family makes it impossible for him to be with her, the hero has distanced himself from temptation and removing himself from the heroine's life. Then he receives an urgent message that her life is in danger. Heart pounding with worry and riding for days without food or rest he arrives as the request of her father and his employer only to be stunned by the orders he's given. The heroine was devastated when the brooding tall dark and hansom Scotsman stunning cut ties with her and though she's tried desperately to move on with her life, she loves him still and he's the only man who can make her feel alive. But regardless of her secret feelings, the idea that her father is forcing her to marry him is absurd. Yes, the hero is the only one capable of protecting her from an insane madman hell bent on slitting her throat but the idea of being wed to a man she loves who doesn't love her in return is heartbreaking. But, regardless of both their strong dislike of the arrangement, the two are wed and off to Scotland within 24 hours of their reunion. It's on this journey where the hero finally experiences true hell, having to deal with the temptress he can now call his wife and his own consuming desire for her-desire he's finding it harder and harder to deny himself. They fight their lust for each other as hard as they can-regardless of the heroine's teasing seduction, they both know that once the villain is dealt with their marriage will be annulled. The heroine tries to suppress the pain she feels at the idea of having the hero once again walk out of her life and can't understand why he's so adamant that they can't be together. When she finally gets the truth out of him, that the curse of his family assures that the woman he loves is destined to die- she is dumbfounded by the absurd idea and furious that he could place any faith is such drivel. Yet soon it comes to light how valid the curse is but that doesn't stop her from loving him from trying to pursued him into letting her be his wife and make him happy. The hero, however can't stomach the idea of seeing her hurt in anyway but he can't see that his rejection causes the greatest hurt of all. This is the first historical romance I've read by this author and though I didn't love it as much as her Paranormal series, I still adored the humor, the torment and the passion of the characters and though the plot well written and engaging. The hero is an assassin employed by the heroine's father and as such he lives tormented by the thinks he's done for his country and the bits of his soul he's sacrificed. Even without the curse he still couldn't imagine himself being worthy of the heroine. He has too much blood on his hands and he knows that if she should find out what he does, she'd look at him with disgust. He is also her opposite in every way. He has always been a loner, antisocial and awkward around people. While the heroine is stunningly cheerful, adventurous and sunny like a summer day. Despite his brooding nature, the heroine has always found him to be hansom and she vowed from the second she met him as a child that he would be the man she would marry. But never could she imagine how hard he would make things between them. He put up one hell of a fight and succeed in making the normally confident heroine doubt herself. I found the characters to be lovely and each tormented in their own way. I found the lunatic villain to be subpar and honestly a let down as it takes the characters less than one chapter to defeat him. No, it was mainly about the conflict of the hero and his curse. The book was full of angst yet a healthy dose of humor was added to balance it out. All in all a typical Kresley Cole novel. I enjoyed it, liked it a lot but didn't LOVE it. ( )
