Someone is murdering beautiful young women in the New York area and displaying them in mausoleums and underground tombs. The FBI is handling the case, with Special Agent Craig Frasier as lead. Kieran Finnegan, forensic psychologist and part owner of Finnegan's, her family's pub, is consulting on the case. Craig and Kieran are a couple who've worked together on more than one occasion. On this occasion, though, Craig fears for the safety of the woman he loves. Because the killer is too close. The body of a young model is found in a catacomb under a two-hundred-year-old church, now deconsecrated and turned into a nightclub. A church directly behind Finnegan's in lower Manhattan. As more women are murdered, their bodies discovered in underground locations in New York, it's clear that the police and the FBI are dealing with a serial killer. Craig and Kieran are desperate to track down the murderer, a man obsessed with female perfection. Obsessed enough to want to "preserve" that beauty by destroying the women who embody it.… (mais)

Definitely slow burn. These all seem to take a little bit to get to the good stuff. I have to get about halfway in before I get to the point where I look forward to picking it up again. The relationship stuff was predictable, what you would expect after reading the first novel and with it being a suspenseful romance book. Kieran and Craig make a good team, although she really needs to listen to him more, as she's always getting herself into difficult situations. He won't always be able to save her. I learned more about the history of New York than I ever thought I would. It made for an interesting story though.

This book had WAY to many extraneous characters. I didn't care about any of the grad students, and they didn't really add anything to the story, just names to try to remember when they came back up again. Numerous archeologists and historians, it was so hard to keep everyone straight.

Short and sweet reviews here, that's what I do :)

All in all, a good addition to the New York Confidential series. If you enjoyed the first one, then definitely continue reading the rest of the books. If you like strong, stubborn female protagonists, with a strong family and good relationships, then this is for you. For anyone who likes a little bit of romance with their mystery, this is a great book to add to your TBR. ( )

Review:

This book is a series but you can read it as a stand alone, although it is helpful to know a bit about the Finnegan family background. I did not read the previous book and I did find it a bit difficult, but not too much, to get to know the Finnegan siblings. The opening chapter was my favorite chapter in this book, it started off with a bang. I did like the interaction between Kieran and Craig, fraught with tension and some passion here and there in the book but not too much that it took away from the murder mystery. The mystery was the main plot and it remained the focus of the book. A serial killer is murdering beautiful women and displaying them in the underground of New York City. I found the history of New York City to be interesting, Kieran's brother runs a tour group that takes you back in history to old time New York City. The Finnegan family runs a bar that has been in the city for ages and a big part of the book takes place in that bar. The main reason I requested this book was for the mystery, I love nothing more than a action packed mystery/thriller where I have no idea what the ending will be. I felt that overall this delivered that for me. I admit that I had some idea of the outcome but was not absolutely sure.

Verdict:

The book delivers a good solid plot with enough twists that did keep me guessing but a bit too distracting with the Finnegan siblings that really had nothing to do with the main plot. This review was originally posted on Cindy's Book Binge ( )

There is never any doubt, when it comes to Heather Graham, that I will grab her book without hesitation. Even a bad book by Heather Graham is a good book and I would definitely recommend A Perfect Obsession.

Kieran Finnegan, a psychologist, also works at the family pub and shares a bed with her FBI guy, Craig Frasier. He knows to keep tabs on her because trouble seems to find her…or does she find it?

A model/actress was murdered just around the corner from Finnegan’s, but nobody thought it was connected to the family…until her brother, Kevin, told her his secret.

Someone wanted her found.

“Living art.”

It’s easy to figure out that Kieran is Irish. She has three brothers. They are quick to defend and protect her, since she’s prone to finding trouble to get into.

We have a headstrong woman, a hunky cop, mystery and dead bodies on display in mausoleums that haven’t seen the light of day in decades, but…

I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’m just not getting into this like I do most of her work. Am I having an off day? Or is it because it’s an ARC and will be tidied up before publishing. I think it will get better. You’ll need to check out A Perfect Obsession to figure it out for yourself.

I feel on edge. I keep thinking…waiting…for “the moment”…when the monster reaches out from under the bed and grabs me.

Heather has created a sense of menace from the serial killer. I can’t put my finger on the villain. Have I met him?

Uh Oh. I think I know who it is and we have a big problem.

I started out having a hard time getting into the story. I don’t know why. It has all the elements I require for a thrilling read. I rarely give up on a book, and I sure wasn’t going to give up on a Heather Graham book. And it is worth sticking with. As usual, she leaves me wanting more and I can hardly wait to pick up another one of her stories.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of A Perfect Obsession by Heather Graham.

Heather Graham is a prolific writer. That is without question. And she has an incredible talent for plotting compelling stories that are filled with twists and turns and romance and suspense and all the things that go into great storytelling. A Perfect Obsession is yet another example of her incredible abilities. In this story pub owner and forensic psychologist Kieran Finnegan consults with FBI Special Agent Craig Fraser to investigate a series of murders perpetrated by a serial killer who is obsessed with beauty. His victims are beautiful young women and he displays them as if they are works of art. Which to him, they are. The characters in this story are wonderful, the villain as bad as villains get, the plot convoluted, and the writing spot on. I don't know how she does it, but Heather Graham seems to turn out almost perfect thrillers and A Perfect Obsession is another in her long list of excellent stories. Could not put it down. Highly recommended.
