"Newly minted chief resident at Boston Memorial Hospital Noah Rothauser is swamped in his new position, from managing the surgical schedules to dealing with the fallouts from patient deaths. Known for its medical advances, the famed teaching hospital has fitted several ORs as "hybrid operating rooms of the future"--an improvement that seems positive until an anesthesia error during a routine procedure results in the death of an otherwise healthy man. Noah suspects Dr. William Mason, an egotistical, world-class surgeon, of an error during the operation and of tampering with the patient's record afterward. But Mason is quick to blame anesthesiologist, Dr. Ava London. When more anesthesia-related deaths start to occur, Noah is forced to question all of the residents on his staff, including Ava, and he quickly realizes there's more to her than what he sees. A social-media junkie, Ava has created multiple alternate personas for herself on the Internet. With his own job and credibility now in jeopardy, Noah must decide which doctor is at fault and who he can believe--before any more lives are lost"--… (mais)

Typical Robin Cook, a bit far fetched but within the realms of possibility. Seems to be correct medically

Over the top medical mystery/thriller with poor ending. Most characters are exaggerations go the usual chief surgical resident, senior surgeon and anasthesiologist. Although the medical events portrayed and the reactions do occur, not with the regularity and excess included here. ( )

First I have to get on a soapbox. I read the reviews and I couldn’t believe the people who work in healthcare chiming in to say this was so unrealistic. One woman worked in physician credentialing and said it was ridiculous. I have worked on Healthcare for 25 years. I am a an administrator who sits on 6 hospital boards, I oversee the entire credentialing dept as well as others. Not only is this story possible, it has happened! His epilogue is spot on! Now for my review.

The first Robin Cook book I ever read was Mutation. I was 19 and I was so engrossed by this author. Since then I have read many more and enjoyed them. When I graduated Nursing school a few years later I enjoyed them even more. True to form; this one was also very good.

Cook writes in detail about medicine albeit background noise. I find it refreshing that he writes with absolute accuracy. This book was hard to put down. I connected with each character and began to loathe anyone against Noah. There was definitely obvious foreshadowing that could have been disguised better. The scariest movies and books are the ones that could actually happen. Healthcare is dangerous and people die all the time from mistakes and plain negligence. It’s sad but true. Often it is covered up and families never know. This book will rattle you, if you are human. Trust me when I tell you, this happens! ( )
