"Paralleling the renowned collection of American oil paintings in The Brooklyn Museum is the equally important American watercolor and pastel collection. Beginning, appropriately, with an 1895 architectural rendering of the Museum's building, this collection includes paintings which manifest a variety of techniques and styles while also documenting changing attitudes. Among the watercolors there are examples by skilled amateurs, by artists making quick, summary notations, by topographical artists reording views before the advent of photography, and by artists who used watercolor as a primary medium for both plein-air paintings and large, highly finished exhibition pieces. The history of pastels is similarly documented with works ranging from the late eighteenth century to the present.
