Princess Diana doesn't exactly fit in Themyscira. All of the other warrior women died in battle and were brought there to live. Her Mother crafted her from the earth so she was born to be there, she didn't earn it. It makes her stand out and because she's a teenager (much younger than her immortal sisters) she's different. Her differences in ethics are shown when Alia Keralis' ship is attacked and destroyed, and somehow ends up on Themyscira. Typically, no human can even find them and yet here she is. Diana saves her, which is likely the opposite of every other woman on the island. When Diana learns more about Alia, she decides to help this Warbringer become a normal girl and stop the age of war from coming back. This book is super well written but it is WAAAAAY too long. It has probably an extra one hundred to two hundred pages that could have been shaved off and given the same effect. Regardless, this was a powerful story of friendship and staying true to yourself (and your ethics!). Leigh did a marvelous job of making these characters feel real despite the insane events going on around them. And to top it off, the cast was extremely diverse and inclusive! It's a great story that fits Princess Diana and Wonder Woman perfectly. Also - that cover! Fantastic. Overall, great read but definitely too long. Three out of five stars. Diana woont met alleen maar vrouwen op een eiland ver van alles af. Op het eiland wonen vrouwen die beloond zijn voor de dingen die ze hebben gedaan en daardoor Amazones zijn geworden. De moeder van Diana is er koningin en Diana is de enige die op het eiland geboren is. Het boek vertelt dat zij door haar moeder is gevormd uit het zand van het eiland. Als Diana op een dag meedoet aan een hardloopwedstrijd over het eiland ziet zij op de zee een schip in nood. Ze ziet een meisje dat zich wanhopig vastklemt aan het schip. Diana kan bijna niet anders dan proberen het meisje te redden. Ze verbergt Alia in een grot en gaat naar het Orakel van het eiland om te vragen wat ze kan doen. Het Orakel zegt Alia de macht heeft om oorlog te brengen naar de aarde en omdat te voorkomen moet ze haar terugbrengen naar de menselijke wereld, met name naar Griekenland, naar de bron van Helena van Troje.
Met wat magie brengt ze Alia terug, maar ze komen in New York terecht en daar begint de reis naar Griekenland. Samen met Jason, de broer van Alia, diens vriend Theo en met Alia's vriendin Nim gaan ze op reis. Geholpen door het kapitaal uit de stichting van de ouders van Jason en Alia. Maar onderweg krijgen ze veel tegenwerking van de mensen, die soms de gedaante aannemen van Griekse goden die allemaal voor oorlog, tegenslag, ontrouw, misdaad en algehele malaise zijn.
Het is heerlijk geschreven, met humor en veel spanning. Verhaal vooral over trouw, vertrouwen en vriendschap. (
