Henry "Monty" Montague was bred to be a gentleman. His passions for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men, have earned the disapproval of his father. His quest for pleasures and vices have led to one last hedonistic hurrah as Monty, his best friend and crush Percy, and Monty's sister Felicity begin a Grand Tour of Europe. When a reckless decision turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything Monty knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.… (mais)

A really delightful romp of a book; I came to love all the main characters so much! It's a very vibrant story that, although a bit unevenly paced in the first half, will absolutely be enjoyed by fans of witty historical YA fiction. The plotline that blended alchemy/magic and science felt a bit watery to me, and I think it could have been stronger in that respect, but I nonetheless look forwards to reading the sequel!
(Also, on a totally personal note: the descriptions of Venice made me so wistful! I've been fortunate enough to travel there once for a few days and reading about the city in this book made me want to go back so badly!! ( )

Honestly I loved it, it's so cute and I love the characters and the journey they go through. Monty is frustrating at first, but has a pretty solid amount of character growth by the end, still learning, but still having learned a lot in the time this adventure took place. I'm here for Monty and Percy, and I'm especially here for Dr. Pirate Felicity and her ace representation! ( )

This is very much in the historical romance genre. I kinda feel like the author read a bunch of hetero historical romances and figured out how to use the conventions of the genre to create a very satisfying tale of star-crossed lovers who happen to be two teenage boys. They are kept apart not only because of their gender but also because Percy is black and Monty is white. To continue this intersectional smorgasbord, Percy has a chronic illness and Monty seems to be an alcoholic with PTSD from being abused. Nevertheless, the story is really fun due to Monty's narration and the best romance novel trope of them all: you always believe these two will end up together despite the odds. I didn't love the plot about a magic panacea but in a romance novel that's so not the point.

Fabulous audiobook narration with all the Britishness you could hope for. I truly loved the way the narrator portrayed Monty, especially how he called everyone "darling." ( )

This was such a fun read. I loved the main character so much. I really was captured from page one. I really loved the dynamics of the cast and also how it dealt with historical based issues like gay relations, female roles and race relations. It also was such a fun adventure story. It was such a quick pace read for being such a long novel. I really grew to love all the characters and I am so excited to see what she does in the sequel. This was book was a prefect mental break. He saunter’d Europe round,

And gather’d ev’ry vice on Christian ground; . . .

The Stews and Palace equally explored,

Intrigued with glory, and with spirit whored;

Tried all hors-d’œuvres, all liqueurs defined,

Judicious drank, and greatly daring dined.
