Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:Matthew Worth is a mess. Somewhere between a good cop and a bad screwup, he botched a marriage and a career. His fellow officers think heâ??s a joke. His commanders are tired of cutting him breaks. Even his wife has left him for a flashy homicide detective. Busted to night patrol at a robbery-prone Omaha supermarket, Worth is doing time, wearing his uniform and asking shoppers if they want paper or plastic. If that isnâ??t enough, he suspects he might be falling for Gwen, the shy checkout girl who may be an even bigger mess than he is. It couldnâ??t get any worse. Until it does.

When Gwen comes to him one night scared and desperate for help, Worth discovers just how far heâ??s willing to go to protect and serve. The next thing he knows, heâ??s driving a stolen car with a corpse in the trunk, a pistol in the glove box, and no way to turn back. Everything he doesnâ??t know could get them killed. And things havenâ??t even begun

Doolittle has written another awesome novel that is full of rich characters and complicated events out of simple situations. He is really good at capturing the chaos that can arise out of a small start.

In this case Officer Matthew Worth is finishing up a divorce and working probationary duty at a local supermarket. Worth's flirtations with Gwen, the checkout clerk at the supermarket, complicate his life when she turns to him for help with her dead boyfriend. Like a lie that must be defended with another lie, Worth's decisions on how to help lead him into first bad and then worse situations. When things finally come to a boil, Worth finally makes some good but painful decisions.

Doolittle has brought us a suspenseful novel about decisions and consequences as portrayed by someone who knows better but who forgets to act better. That was one of the things that I both liked and disliked. Worth made decisions that were questionable, to say the least, and which made me wonder. But then Worth would even admit to himself that he didn't know why he did things which made him more human in my eyes. Who among us has not made some decision that we look back at and wonder why we were so stupid? I just hope that for all of us that it did not involve a dead body. In case I was not obvious enough, highly recommended. ( )

The Cleanup by Sean Doolittle was a good solid thriller about corrupted cops, domestic violence and missing mob money that plays out in Omaha, Nebraska,

While the main characters are likeable and there’s plenty of unsavoury villains, overall the characterizations felt a little cookie cutter. The story of good intentions going awry was a little familiar but the author was smart in his choices and didn’t overwrite or moralize.

I did appreciate the fast pacing, the cleverness of the plot and the nuance of humor and I would definitely read another Sean Doolittle thriller in the future. ( )

I read this one for a local library-sponsored mystery fiction discussion group, and for the fact that it is a regional author (I'm in Lincoln, NE). This was an enjoyable read -- I liked the simplicity of the narrative and the neat and tidy way that all the plot threads were tied up by the end. The language was a bit coarser than I truly enjoy, but still sounded realistic to my literary ear. Sadly, I just never really grew to like the main character, and so felt a bit removed from caring whether or not he succeeded in his attempt to "clean up" the murder. Still, worth reading! ( )

Entertaining, not a standout but well constructed and with enough twists and turns to keep you interested as well as characters that you did actually care about so worth my while reading more from this author. ( )

How refreshing it is to read a well written, hard hitting, noir not set in New York or Los Angeles. Matt Worth is a disgraced cop, sent to patrol a grocery store in Omaha, Nebraska. Getting to know one of the check out clerks draws him into a labyrinth of intrigue and crime that leads to a series of actions and events that rushes headlong to a startling conclusion.

The story is tightly plotted, the characters are well drawn and fully developed; even the minor characters are complex. A roller coaster ride of a book, my only complaint is that it was over much too soon. ( )
