"The eighth book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone's cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don't call it "time travel"-these historians "investigate major historical events in contemporary time." And they aren't your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets. The Chronicles of St. Mary's tells the chaotic adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriots-Director Bairstow, Leon "Chief" Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many more-as they travel through time, saving St. Mary's Institute (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea. You think you're having a bad day? Max is trapped in the same deadly sandstorm that buried the fifty thousand-strong army of the Pharaoh Cambyses II, and she's sharing the only available shelter for miles around with the murdering psychopath who recently kidnapped her and left her adrift in time. She's no safer at St. Mary's. Tragedy strikes-not once, but several times-and with no Leon, no Markham, and no Peterson at her side, Max's personal life slowly begins to unravel. From the Egyptian desert to the Battle of Hastings, and from Bayeux Cathedral to the Sack of Constantinople, Max must race through time to save the ones she loves"--… (mais)

Anytime I feel like a lightweight time travel romp, I can count on another Jodi Taylor novel. And the Rest Is History takes the “don’t-call-it-time-travel” historians to the Battle of Hastings and the sack of Constantinople. Of course, we have the usual domestic dramas and contretemps with the Time Police. ( )

This episode made me feel lots of emotions. What a rollercoaster!

I really like this series. These books make laugh, cry, be afraid and love together with the characters. Reading these books make me feel at home in St. Mary's and make me forget all the troubles in the world. ( )

Clive Ronan is back and, rather surprisingly, offers Max a truce. Is this too good to be true? Max agrees to meet him, of course, but what could have been good news for St Mary's turns into a series of highly traumatic events, both for our favourite historians and associated friends and colleagues, and for the reader.

After reading a couple of reviews I had already prepared myself for some trauma, but even I couldn't imagine the lengths Jodi Taylor would go to to make Max and the rest of St Mary's suffer. This book took me longer to read than usual, not because I wasn't engaged enough, but because I was too engaged. I don't mind admitting that the tissues were out more than once. I still find it astonishing that a bunch of fictional characters and vivid descriptions of historical events can elicit that kind of response. ( )

For globe-trotting and time-bending adventure, Max and the crew at St. Mary's are intoxicating. No. 8 in the series elicits very strong emotional connections from readers who've come to embrace these historians as family. ( )

If the previous novel in the series was full of wonderful, get ready for a rough ride in this one, full of gut-wrenching awful, from the description of the sack of Constantinople in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade to the events closely concerning our beloved characters. In the intro to the NEXT book in the series, which I am listening to now, Taylor jokes about a need for a support group for the previous book, and I was close to needing one, except, well, except this is a series that is built on being blunt and vivid about history and the violence therein but loving (and vivid) of the characters at St. Mary's. Can't say more about things without spoiling, but if you get this far, keep going! Never a dull moment! ***** ( )
