"A hope is UP. / A bend is DOWN. / A spin is AROUND and AROUND and AROUND." So begins this rhyming narrative, which follows a young boy as he walks his dog, witnessing and experiencing a variety of motions along the way. From slipping and sliding to ambling and rambling, boy and dog make their way around town, eventually finding themselves at home again.

Although I wouldn't describe it as a particular favorite, of the new picture-books I have been reading recently, I do think that with its rhyming text and cute illustrations, A Hop Is Up would make an engaging read-aloud selection. The artwork, done in ink and watercolor in a fun cartoon-like style, will have particular appeal to the younger picture-book audience, I believe. ( )
