J.M. Coetzee's latest novel, The Schooldays of Jesus, is now available from Viking. Late Essays: 2006-2016 will be available January 2018.  In the fall of 1869 Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, lately a resident of Germany, is summoned back to St. Petersburg by the sudden death of his stepson, Pavel. Half crazed with grief, stricken by epileptic seizures, and erotically obsessed with his stepson's landlady, Dostoevsky is nevertheless intent on unraveling the enigma of Pavel's life. Was the boy a suicide or a murder victim? Did he love his stepfather or despise him? Was he a disciple of the revolutionary Nechaev, who even now is somewhere in St. Petersburg pursuing a dream of apocalyptic violence? As he follows his stepson's ghost--and becomes enmeshed in the same demonic conspiracies that claimed the boy--Dostoevsky emerges as a figure of unfathomable contradictions: naive and calculating, compassionate and cruel, pious and unspeakably perverse.… (mais)

Summer in Baden-Baden de Leonid Tsypkin (wrmjr66, giovannigf)
wrmjr66: Another book that fictionalizes part of Dostoevsky's life.
giovannigf: It's interesting to compare these two stories that feature Dostoevsky as a protagonist. Coetzee writes in a style that more closely resembles a 19th-century novel, but Tsypkin gets much closer to Dostoevsky's personality. Both will be enjoyable to fans of the Russian master's work.… (mais)

giovannigf: Conrad's most Dostoevsky-esque novel (supposedly written as a retort to Crime and Punishment) shares some of the themes and subjects of Coetzee's novel in which Dostoevsky is the protagonist. Both will help you when you're jonesin' for more Dostoevsky.

In this book Coetzee imagines the experience of Dostoevsky when he returned to St. Peterson from Germany to claim the body of his stepson. He first goes to the apartment where Pavel was living: a mother, Anna Sergeyevna, and her daughter live there and had rented a bedroom to Pavel. He tries, by putting on Pavel's white suit, by lying on his bed, by talking to Anna Sergeyevna, to get into Pavel's mind, to hear his thoughts. He wants to know: did Pavel kill himself? Or was he murdered? Or was it an accident?

He goes to the police department to listen to the official reports. He meets the revolutionary the police are seeking, with whom Pavel apparently connected.

Dostoevsky has a young wife at home. In St. Peterson he finds Anna, closer to his age, and he wants her. He is greedy in wanting all that was Pavel, including Pavel's friendship with Anna's young daughter. It isn't a pretty picture and at times I just didn't want to read it. I came to dislike the writer. I wanted Anna to kick him out once and for all. Fortunately, it is not a long book and it did m ( )
