Bookshop_Lady: Mary Stuart ties the Arthur legend to Rome through Ambrosius and his brother Uther. Valerio Massimo takes a slightly different turn to the story: The Last Legion is the story of the last Roman emperor, who fled to England searching for the last legion of Roman soldiers, hoping they would still be loyal to him. This last emperor, a youth of about 13 when he attains the throne, will grow up to become Uther Pendragon. Full of unneeded junk. Spare me! ( )

Another book about Merlin, you say-Ah! I have read many Arthurian themed books and I will tell you, this is the very best. I was leery about picking this up. However, once I had it on my nightstand it was the the first book I reached for. It is the first book, in a long time, that captured me and held me hostage many a night.

Mary Stuart has woven mythology and history into a stunning book. She has done her research and humanized Merlin and the large cast of characters that surround him from birth to young adulthood. I am anxious to continue the series to see where this Merlin, unlike any other Merlin written about, takes us.

As I said, this book captured me and I could not put it down. Book 2 is calling to me. ( )

Another classic I read as a high school student which I have long remembered, therefore I jumped at a chance to again own the title as an audiobook.

Born the bastard son of a Welsh princess, Myrdden Emrys - or as he would later be known, Merlin - leads a perilous childhood, haunted by portents and visions. But destiny has great plans for this no-man's-son, taking him from prophesying before High King Vortigern to the crowning of Uther Pendragon, and the conception of Arthur, king for once and always.

I read this trilogy when I was sick with mono, so its probably deserving of another reading. What I do recall was fantastic, engaging, and kept me occupied in my suffering for a very long time. ( )

The Crystal Cave is yet another book in the library I inherited from my mother that I finally decided to read. I thought it was going to be a romantic mystery but was pleasantly surprised to find it is the historical fiction account of Merlin the Wizard, beginning with his birth in 470 A.D. Britain. Of course, I've read the story of Camelot and am familiar with Merlin's role in raising King Arthur, but never knew Merlin's personal story. Mary Stewart, a gifted writer, has taken historical facts and events and skillfully placed the wizard, then known as Myryddin Emrys, in the early days of war-torn Wales. Born a bastard, Merlin finds his father, Ambrosius, before he becomes king of Greater Britain, and with Merlin's help, Ambrosius reigns for many years. During this time, Merlin grows into a man and renowned prophet. The story is absorbing and gives, yet another side to events leading up to the famous King Arthur and the knights of the round table legend. I recommend this book to historical fiction readers and fans of the supernatural. ( )

Normale druk, volle bladspiegel.

O Merlin in your crystal cave
Deep in the diamond of the day,
Will there ever be a singer
Whose music will smooth away
The Furrow drawn by Adam's finger
Across the meadow and the wave?
Or a runner who'll outrun
Man's long shadow driving on,
Burst through the gates of history,
And hang the apple on the tree?
Will your sorcery ever show
The sleeping bride shut in her bower,
The day wreathed in its mound of snow,
And Time locked in his tower?

"Mithras, Apollo, Arthur, Christ -- call him what you will," I said. "What does it matter what men call the light? It is the same light, and men must live by it or die. I only know that God is the source of all the light which has lit the world, and that his purpose runs through the world and past each one of us like a great river, and we cannot check or turn it, but can only drink from it while living, and commit our bodies to it when we die." -- Merlin
