"A celebration of the extraordinary life of Ezra Jack Keats, creator of The Snowy Day. The story of The Snowy Day begins more than one hundred years ago, when Ezra Jack Keats was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. The family were struggling Polish immigrants, and despite Keats's obvious talent, his father worried that Ezra's dream of being an artist was an unrealistic one. But Ezra was determined. By high school he was winning prizes and scholarships. Later, jobs followed with the WPA and Marvel comics. But it was many years before Keats's greatest dream was realized and he had the opportunity to write and illustrate his own book. For more than two decades, Ezra had kept pinned to his wall a series of photographs of an adorable African American child. In Keats's hands, the boy morphed into Peter, a boy in a red snowsuit, out enjoying the pristine snow; the book became The Snowy Day, winner of the Caldecott Medal, the first mainstream book to feature an African American child. It was also the first of many books featuring Peter and the children of his -- and Keats's -- neighborhood. Andrea Davis Pinkney's lyrical narrative tells the inspiring story of a boy who pursued a dream, and who, in turn, inspired generations of other dreamers"-- "A celebration of the extraordinary life of Ezra Jack Keats, creator of The Snowy Day"--… (mais)

"Snow doesn't know who's needy or dirty or greedy or nice. Snow doesn't choose where to fall. Snow doesn't pick a wealthy man's doorstep over a poor lady's stoop. That's Snow's magic."

I cannot wait to use this as the base for a December/January bulletin board. The illustrations and text come together so beautifully. This is one biography I need to add to my school library. ( )

This would be a great book for older readers ages 9+. This is a beautiful poem and a lot of the words used have a lot of deeper meanings to them and could be harder for younger children to understand. This poem goes over the life of Erza Jack Keats and creating snowy day. There is a lot of bold imagery and would be a great book for older readers who are trying to dissect a poem and look into the deeper meaning. ( )

A Poem for Peter really is one long poem. It celebrates the life of Ezra Jack Keats, a renowned children's book author. The language is rhythmic and imaginative. I would hold off on reading it to younger students as they would miss some of the meaning and likely not appreciate the poetry of the language as an older student would. It is also quite long for a picture book. The illustrations are very pretty, and often use collage just as Keats did in his books. It would be a wonderful book for a curriculum that discusses authors and illustrators. ( )
