Teenager Lane Roanoke has always struggled growing up with a depressed mother who seemed to hate her. After her mother's suicide, Lane is relocated to her mother's hometown in rural Kansas. She never met any of her mother's family before that summer where she would meet her erratic cousin, Allegra, her elegant grandmother, and her charismatic grandfather. She quickly learns from Allegra that she they are part of a long lineage of "Roanoke Girls" who are all known for their beauty and inevitably come to a bad end. This summer, Lane will form lasting bonds, including an extremely sexually charged relationship with a local boy named Cooper.

But there is something rotten in house Roanoke. Behind her grandmother's steely eyes, her grandfather's warm smile, and Allegra's venomous jealousy is a dark secret. A secret that every Roanoke girl has known. A secret that drove them away. A secret, that when she discovers it, will send Lane running as well.

Years later, Lane will get a phone call from her grandfather. Allegra has gone missing and he wants Lane to come back and help find her. Lane is afraid to get sucked back into the orbit of her old life, but she goes. She owes Allegra that much.

This book is brimming over with purple language and over-dramatic prose. Every aspect of the plot is salacious and seems to be reveling in the gory details in way that seems in poor taste. The whole thing seemed unbelievable, starting with Lane's bizarre bond with her cousin who seems to be a cruel, shallow, and unlikeable girl, and ending with the booze-soaked confession at the book's climax that segues into a literal brawl.

I also couldn't understand how Lane had such deep connections with everyone in the town when she had only know them for about 90 days many years ago. The way they all speak about conversations they had that summer with perfect recall was just unrealistic. Ultimately, this book just wasn't for me. I felt like the author was using this over the top crimes in this novel to validate the fact that there really isn't much plot happening. It didn't feel earned. ( )

3.75* This book dragged and thankfully I was hooked enough in the beginning to want to know what had happened to Allegra, but ultimately, the ending was a bit anti-climatic with all the heavy-handed hints about what had been going on the house for years. The only "surprise" wasn't that much of a surprise and thankfully there wasn't much left of the book at the point to get through. While this book wasn't terrible, I wouldn't recommend it to individuals who are starting out and looking for a suspense/thriller book. I would maybe put this book in the category of mystery (without much actual suspense). I did enjoy the author's style of writing and would be interested to see what else she writes. ( )

Not a new storyline, but there is a different spin on it. Reminded me of a V. C. Andrews book, most of which I've enjoyed. 3.5 ( )

Wow. I had no idea what this book was about going in and it got real dark, real quick. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a while. ( )

Lane is a young woman who has returned to the family’s estate… Roanoke… from where she escaped as a teen hoping to never go back in the middle of “nowhere” Kansas…but her "cousin" Allegra has disappeared and she hopes to help find her. We quickly learn that home holds no good memories for Lane and was not a good place to have grown up. Abuse is a hard subject to digest in any form, but in this case it’s the scope of abuse that keeps the story going and the pages turning. The ending of this story produces a character that jumps right out of the woodwork with an ending that the reader never expects. Please be aware that even though it is well written…it is a very disturbing story and does contains some horrendous subject matters that may not set well with some readers. ( )
