Flynn Hawthorn, the ninth daughter of the ninth daughter, has finally realized her special power, a power unheard of in Moa Bend. Flynn’s mother can finally be proud of her. But there is a rift in the friendship between Flynn and her BFF Hazel. But now Hazel is missing and Flynn must find her. With the assistance of young Po, Flynn travels once again into Dreamwood Forest in search of Hazel.
Flynn’s mother also finally tells Flynn a bit about her father. So now Flynn feels she must go on a search to explore her new-found powers and to perhaps learn more about this man from “beyond the Mist”.
Accompanying Flynn on her journey is Oturu, a falcon who is afraid of the sight of blood! Flynn is amazed to discover that she now has some surprisingly rare powers.
Flynn begins to feel the burden that it is up to her to find the way to reunite the Book of Shadow with the Book of Light. However those in possession of the Book of Shadow will do whatever it takes to stop her.
As in the first book, the characters are delightful. Po is absolutely charming. Zip, the spunky Red Faery, returns. Even Oturu has a personality. Rue develops her characters really well.
