Story 3.5 of 5 stars

Listened to audio narrated well by Amy Landon. I really enjoyed her narration, she does snark well.

This book continues Claire's story after the big battle in The Veil. It seems little has changed from that event. Claire and Liam continue her 'Bounty Hunter' training and Liam is still hung up about her being a Sensitive. Their attraction continues to grow but his issues with her being a Sensitive keep fowling things up and I honestly wish Claire had other options. By the end of the book I was willing to write Liam off for Claire.

Claire continues her magic training with the angelic Malachi, and the author keeps suggesting to us that he is interested in her, the question is what sort of interest. I like that even through Claire's fears she is able to find a path to get her to the other side. She's willing to work hard, seek training and use her wits to prepare for the future and to get herself out of trouble in the now.

Claire and her friends are trying to track down a zealot cult leader determined to wipe out all magic, bent on murdering any person or 'thing' that might enable magic to exist. Their investigation and hunt to stop him from murdering anymore paranormals or humans drive the action in this book but it's almost all very predictable. But it is also very poignant and relevant to what's happening in the real world today, touching on bullying, violence, intolerance and people looking for a scape goat for their suffering.

This is a likeable book but there are these odd story lines that keep getting tossed at a reader that don't seem to go anywhere or maybe they are laying groundwork for future books but it makes for distracting reading. We get a lot of interesting time with other characters which took the spotlight off the two main characters more than once. I found myself caring more about Moses, Malachi and a few others and caring less about Claire and Liam. In the end we have a resolution to the zealot but are tossed another big curve leaving us with a cliff hanger and an unknown future until the next book.

The second book picks up fairly soon after the first book. Claire is taking lessons to try and control her magic and also learning to be a bounty hunter. Granted I think the bounty hunter lessons is so she can spend time with Liam. The tension in this book is a new group in New Orleans that believes to cleanse the area of all magic everything about magic must be destroyed. Devil’s island, the prisoners, the Containment and anyone that works or supports the system in any way.

I didn’t care for this one as much and I’m not sure why. The plot moved along fairly quickly and there was tension throughout the story but it just seemed that the villain they were fighting wasn’t that great of a tactician for all the people and supplies he managed to rally to his cause. It also might have been that the ending really wasn’t upbeat at all.

The Sight is book two in the Devil’s Isle series by Chloe Neill. We’re in the middle of a war that gets dangerous fast.

This series does need to be read in order. Their is very little recap, and most of the world-building is laid out in book one, [b:The Veil|21415815|The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1)|Chloe Neill|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1415652885s/21415815.jpg|40716767]. Each book builds on the next getting us deeper into the magical and political world.

The Sight is tailored towards the political implications of two opposing sides. The start was a bit slow, which made it hard to get into the story, but around the hallway point things pick up and come to a head. Things then start to get very interesting with a few surprises and revelations along the way. It makes me curious especially after such an ending to see what will happen next. I didn’t expect that outcome.

We do get some forward progress with Claire and Liam’s romance. The sexual tension is strong between them, but even though they make progress, they also take a few steps back.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Sight.

If you like an exciting urban fantasy, then The Sight by Chloe Neill is for you. I’ve enjoyed every one of her 13-book Chicagoland Vampires series. That meant that her new series, The Devil’s Isle was an easy pick for me. The Sight is book number two in that series, so be sure to start off with the first book, called [b:The Veil|21415815|The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1)|Chloe Neill|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1415652885s/21415815.jpg|40716767].

Set in New Orleans, following a war between humans and paranormals the series features Claire Connolly. She’s a human scrambling to stay afloat with her mercantile business as well as her “extracurricular” work. Claire has a particular magical ability that she must both learn to control and yet also keep secret. If those in charge knew she had it she’d be relegated to Devil’s Isle, a part of the city where all “paras” are kept. (Which is my nice way of saying quasi-concentration camp.)

Claire pairs up with Liam Quinn, who’s a human working as bounty hunter for paras whose magic has turned them into monsters. While the first book in the series focused on the action of human vs. para conflict, this one is more about political maneuvering. There’s plenty of tension and suspense, but it’s a strategic sort.

Claire continues to search for clues about her magical genealogy, especially as it relates to her father. She’s processing intense emotions here, but Neill doesn’t make them maudlin or melodramatic. I appreciate the depth they bring to Claire’s backstory.

Neill does strong world building again in this book. The characters become more connected to each other and the story, and I felt myself more drawn to them this time around. For me, this is a “palate cleanser” book. It’s not especially heavy, and easy to digest. I need the balance, and Neill delivers. I’ll definitely pick up the third book in the series, most likely sooner rather than later.

Claire continues to split her time before running her family shop out of the Zone - he magic struck heart of New Orleans - and working with Liam as a bounty hunter to bring in lost wraiths to Containment - and their prison for paranormals

Increasingly she sees the injustice of Devil’s Isle - not least because of her own carefully hidden magic. But all of Containment are at risk when a charismatic human preacher starts rallying people against the remaining imprisoned supernaturals. The war ended 7 years ago, but someone is trying to start it again

Like the first book in this series, I have to say what really stands out here is the world.

The concept of a war zone created by magical invaders, of the prisoners of that war - so many supernatural creatures - locked away. Of permanent scars left on the land due to the influx of magic and then people trying to scratch a living in that land, in battle scarred New Orleans, in the shadow of that prison, dealing with shortages and magic and the constant threat of wraiths but also the oppression and intrusion of Containment interference.

The magic invaders themselves are divided, not just by creature type and magic but also by faction - the invading Court and the ordered Consularis who were forced into the fight. Then this book brings in lots of extra complexity around Sensitives - humans who have absorbed magic, gained abilities but now risk imprisonment and worse. As well as human hate groups blaming the remaining imprisoned paranormals for everything that is wrong in the Zone.

That was also something that mildly frustrated me - or not so mildly. Like we’re told there’s a difference between the Consularis and the Court and the Court forced the Consularis to fight - ok, fair enough but can we go to that in more depth? See some actual divisions? Maybe meet one of the court? It’s suggested the Court were ruled by the Consularis - were they escaping what they considered oppressive rule? We’ve already had the words “consularis” and “order” even strict order bandied about a lot - maybe expand?

Or expand a bit more on the numerous supernaturals we see? What are they? What powers do they have? What cultures? We alluded to some having troubles adapting to Earth - let’s see that

Or how Ezekiel and his anti-paranormal movement in part succeeds because there’s a lot of very poor, desperate people living in the now 7 year old refugee camps - can we explore their lives and struggles? Or how some are willing to live in the camps because New Orleans itself is so heavily monitored and policed by Containment.

This book, this world lays out a thousand and one fascinating plot points and they’re strewn around and I beg, BEG to follow any one of them up.

And, like completely unnecessary pineapple on an otherwise delicious pizza, we have Liam and Claire’s romance. And…. whyyyyy? We have this world, this amazing world, an excellent brewing conflict pointing out plenty of other nice hooks and still lots of thing about the world that I really want developing a whole lot more and we have this romance in the middle. And I know I harp on about unnecessary romance a lot - it’s just I’ve seen an awful lot of excellent adventures and worlds fall into the background while we focus on the bland love. Which is what gets me - see if Liam and Claire had met, declared each other hot, decided they were going to work together, found they had similar values, had hot sex, liked each other, agreed with each other, became closer through their adventure, shared interest and mutual passion, I’d be there for that. But instead we have yet another couple brought together through proximity and hotness but NO they cannot be together because CONVOLUTED REASONS and then sexual tension, woe, sexual tension, woe, rince repeat like we’ve read in a 100 other books, introduce another guy who is kinda-sorta competition (hi Malachi) for some jealousy. When they finally hook up then we have drama that splits them up again.

Which is what we have here - it’s such a text book paint by numbers romance (right down the the cajun love interest and if you’re in New Orleans you simply have to have a cajun love interest, it is known) and it stands out as extra cliched because the rest of the book is so imaginative and creative. When you have a world with such original concepts, the central romance being so typical with a love interest who feels so meh just stands out sharply
