"The author of the smash bestseller, I Let You Go, propels readers into a dark and claustrophobic thriller, in which a normal, everyday woman becomes trapped in the confines of her normal, everyday world... Every morning and evening, Zoe Walker takes the same route to the train station, waits at a certain place on the platform, finds her favorite spot in the car, never suspecting that someone is watching her... It all starts with a classified ad. During her commute home one night, while glancing through her local paper, Zoe sees her own face staring back at her, a grainy photo along with a phone number and listing for a website called findtheone.com. Other women begin appearing in the same ad, a different one every day, and Zoe realizes they've become the victims of increasingly violent crimes--including rape and murder. With the help of a determined cop, she uncovers the ad's twisted purpose...a discovery that turns her paranoia into full-blown panic. For now Zoe is sure that someone close to her has set her up as the next target. And now that man on the train--the one smiling at Zoe from across the car--could be more than just a friendly stranger. He could be someone who has deliberately chosen her and is ready to make his next move… (mais)

Πόσο γρήγορα μπορείς να τρέξεις;
Όταν πρέπει;
Με τακούνια και φούστα για τη δουλειά, με την τσάντα σου να κρέμεται, πόσο γρήγορα;

Τι θα γίνει και κάποιος άλλος γνωρίζει το καθημερινό σου δρομολόγιο; Κάποιος με όχι πολύ αγνές προθέσεις;

Η Ζόι Ουόκερ μετακινείται καθημερινά με το μετρό στο Λονδίνο. Όπως τόσοι και τόσοι συμπολίτες της, διαβάζει εφημερίδα μέχρι να φτάσει στον προορισμό της. Μια μέρα, βλέπει τη φωτογραφία της σε μια εφημερίδα, με ένα σάιτ και ένα τηλέφωνο. Λίγο θολή, αλλά είναι σίγουρη ότι πρόκειται για την ίδια. Η οικογένειά της πιστεύει ότι είναι απλά κάποια που της μοιάζει. Όμως την επόμενη μέρα, στην αγγελία υπάρχει η φωτογραφία μιας άλλης γυναίκας, τη μεθεπόμενη μιας άλλης. Τι συμβαίνει με αυτές τις φωτογραφίες, το τηλέφωνο που δεν λειτουργεί και το σάιτ που χρειάζεται κωδικό για να μπεις;

Η αλόγιστη χρήση του ίντερνετ και ο σύγχρονος τρόπος ζωής μας έχουν φέρει σε σημείο να μην έχουμε ηθικούς φραγμούς, να μην κατανοούμε πως οι πράξεις μας θα επηρεάσουν κάποιον άλλον άνθρωπο, να θεωρούμε ότι είναι απλά ένα παιχνίδι ή ότι κάνουμε κάτι αθώο όταν σπρώχνουμε κάποιον στις γραμμές του τρένου. Πολλοί σκέφτονται ότι όλα αυτά γίνονται μόνο στα βιβλία και στις ταινίες. Αλλά είναι όντως πραγματικά έτσι; Τα παιδιά μας μεγαλώνουν με βίαια βιντεοπαιχνίδια. Σκοτώνουν εικονικά κάθε μέρα. Τα μηνύματα που περνάνε στο μυαλό τους είναι δύσκολο να τα επεξεργαστούν και να συνειδητοποιήσουν ότι η ζωή δεν είναι παιχνίδι. Έτσι μεγαλώνουν, γίνονται ενήλικες, τρέχουν για να προλάβουν τη ζωή δουλεύοντας όλη μέρα και θεωρούν πως ότι θέλουν μπορούν να το πάρουν με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο. Ακόμα και θυματοποιώντας αθώες γυναίκες, θεωρώντας τες πιόνια στη σκακιέρα του παιχνιδιού τους. Μια μεγάλη συνωμοσία εναντίων των γυναικών λαμβάνει χώρα στο Λονδίνο, αλλά θα μπορούσε να συμβαίνει οπουδήποτε. Αν εσύ ήσουν στόχος;

Σε ολόκληρο το βιβλίο υπάρχουν σκέψεις του ανθρώπου που κρύβεται πίσω από όλα αυτά. Σκέψεις που είναι απίστευτα τρομακτικές, αν ήταν αλήθεια, αν βρισκόσουν σε αυτή τη θέση. Πως ξέρεις όμως πως δεν βρίσκεσαι;

After reading Clare Mackintosh’s debut novel, ‘I Let You Go’, I was really looking forward to the this follow up. I had enjoyed the first book, thought it was well written with a super twist that, unusually, came halfway through. Unfortunately, I See You was nowhere near the calibre of it’s predecessor, and ultimately I was disappointed.

The story is narrated by mother of two Zoe Walker, another unknown narrator, and in the third person from the point of view of police officer Kelly Swift.

Zoe is horrified when she spots her own photo in an advert in the classified section of a free newspaper – there’s nothing there other than her picture, a phone number and a website address, but when she goes to the website she cannot gain entry. The next day the advert has a photo of a different woman, and she soon realises that there is a different woman shown each day. When she realises that crimes are being committed against some of the women in the pictures, Zoe starts to worry about her own safety. Who is printing these adverts and what kind of danger is she in?

Meanwhile PC Kelly Swift, still recovering from disciplinary action taken against her a few years before, becomes involved in the investigation into the advertisements and subsequent attacks on the women featured. It’s a race against time to discover who is behind the pictures and stop the crimes before more women are hurt.

Okay – so here’s the good part: the writing is well paced, and the characters are fairly well drawn (at least Zoe, her daughter Katie, and PC Swift are all easy to relate to). The idea behind the mystery is an intriguing one, and so far so good.

However…the final reveal, which I won’t give away here, almost made me throw the book against the wall in disgust. I can suspend my disbelief to an extent but this was ridiculous. Also, and I don’t think this is too spoilery, Zoe was not able to access the website because a password was required and she couldn’t figure it out. Fair enough – by her own admission, she was not particularly computer savvy. However, when the police are investigating and also cannot work out how to get in for some time, it didn’t make sense that the people who the advert was aimed at were miraculously able to figure out the password.

Anyway, it’s a quick read and undemanding if you don’t think too deeply about it. After the brilliance of I Let You Go, though, I can’t help feeling that this may have been rushed in order to capitalise on the success of that book. I’ve read worse for sure, but I’ve also read a LOT better. ( )

I heard about this book and read good reviews. It's disturbing but a real page turner. I need to read Let Her Go now. I like the writing style too. It was an easier read for a thriller than other books I've read like this. ( )

Honestly this book was dancing towards 5 stars before we got to the two reveals/twists and I went seriously? They are not explained very well so I just didn't think they fit the book at that point.

"I See You" follows two women (Zoey Walker and Kelly Swift) and an unknown narrator. When Zoey sees a picture of herself in the local paper along with an add to a dating site she wonders what is going on. When Zoey realizes that a few days earlier she recognizes the woman in the ad she calls Kelly (a PC working in London). The two women start to wonder what is going on with women having their pictures put in ads and what it may have to do with some recent attacks of women. The unknown narrator gives us insight into what is going on and why.

Zoey is a single mother two two children and lives with them and her partner, Simon. Zoey we quickly find out divorced her husband almost a decade earlier after finding out he cheated on her. She meets Simon around a year or two later and then he moves in with them. It seems her daughter Katie gets along with Simon, but her son Justin does not. Zoey at times I found hysterical and fairly exhausting. She is rightfully stressed but her character flips over minor things and also seems to be a helicopter parent excusing her son's issues while trying to force her daughter to get a 'real career." When Zoey starts her own investigation into things, she starts to wonder if someone close to her is behind the ad.

Kelly is a PC who we find out was demoted after an incident with a suspect. I actually liked Kelly's development here. We find out that an incident involving her twin sister has haunted her and Kelly definitely steps over the line throughout this case as well. I liked that she had a mentor and supervisor telling her she doesn't get to tell victims how they need to be/act. Kelly was being judgmental about a lot of things and it was interesting to read how she slowly starts to realize that she can't push people to do things just because that is what she would do.

The unknown narrator sounds like a psychopath. When we get to who this really is though I went really and moved on.

The other characters in this book are developed as well and I think Mackintosh did a good job with setting them up into the main story-line.

The writing was interesting and I liked the details on how something like this could be possible. The flow worked too I thought.

As I said earlier, the book pretty much slid down once we get to the reveal. It didn't make any real sense at all. Then we get a twist ending and I went, seriously? It left me with more questions than answers and I was left feeling dissatisfied. ( )
