Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds' resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn't a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer-turned-thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors. Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family's house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons' society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King's assassins. When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go. He offers her the one thing Ari can't refuse: a wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.… (mais)

Full Review on my blog!

This is my first foray into Kova’s writing and the first thing I will say is that I was not expecting the world of Loom to be SO big. The Alchemists of Loom has everything you'd ever want out of a fantasy adventure story. I was completely invested from beginning to end; what a wonderful, kickass first book in this series!

The book begins with Ari, a Chimera, known as the Write Wratih, she is a thief off on a job that no one should be able to do but she can with ease. This job brings her into contact with Cvareh, a Dragon and an enemy for being so. But they strike a deal and it starts a chain of events that will have you flying through this book. Honestly, the first few chapters were a little confusing but you are slowly wrapped into it as you learn about where these characters are and the history that has morphed their personalities.

The world building was imaginative, detailed and impressive. I was quickly drawn into Ari, Florence & Cvareh’s quest and their worlds. It was fast paced with filled with mystery and unexpected twists, great characters and plenty of action and suspense.

It was a very interesting steampunk world with an imaginative take on races, technology, and magic. The antagonists were a bit one-dimensional, and the character development was a bit clumsy, with lots of telling, not showing, especially with regards to the relationships between the three protagonists. The protagonists Arianna, Cvareh, and Florence are all interesting and three-dimensional and the plot for the most part was engaging.

I got it as a discounted ebook, and I'd definitely read the next book in the series. ( )

Hello Fellow Readers,

I am so surprised how much I liked this book considering it took me two times to read it. The first time I was in the middle of my reading slump and I just could not get into the book. The second time, however, was a completely different experience. At First, I thought Arianna was Selfish, Egotists, and Stubborn but as the story progresses you start to see a softer side especially in the interactions with Florence. This made me really endear to the character. I loved Cvareh and Florence as well which made it a breeze when reading their point of view.

The world that Kova built is phenomenal and the way she gives you backstory and exposition so subtle without punching you in the face with blocks of text is great. I enjoyed the different guilds, while also learning about the different Dragon houses. It's also refreshing to read about Dragons rather than other mythical creatures like fae (They are overused in my opinion). The slow build and evolution of Arianna and Cvareh's relationship were fun to read. I am so rooting for them!

Leona was not a hard POV to read despite me not liking her (which you shouldn't do). The sadistic tendencies of dragons towards other really makes you a bigger fan of Arianna and Cvareh. Nova and Loom are so different and Kova did a really good job describing the cities around Loom. Since the next book takes place on Nova it makes me really excited to see how that differs, although I think I already know. Overall, I am really glad I gave this book another shot. Can't wait to read The Dragons of Nova Next. ( )

Another fine start to a fantasy trilogy. I particularly like the ebb and flow of attraction between Ari and Cvareh as the story moves on. I'm already waiting for the other two books to arrive at my library so I can sit on my deck and get completely lost in the remainder of the story. ( )
