This was pretty rubbish but I still enjoyed it (I have a sinus infection at the moment which might have something to do with it). It reads like a cross between one of the Executioner spin offs like Phoenix Force and a Tom Clancy presents series. The story revolves around a shadowy paramilitary group operating in the US (don't worry, they're the good guys!) and feels very much like the set up for a series (which is exactly what it is). So there's a fairly scant plot and lots of individual back stories for various characters. The author makes the strange choice of presenting dialogue in a script form ("Cal(chuckling): No way!") but aside from that and the dodgy politics it's a fun enough, switch your brain off kind of ride. Never mess with a Marine Good characters, Non-stop action that makes you want not to be interrupted. I finished it in a day, and immediately started on book 2. (I also have 3 and 4 teed up ready.) The series name "Corps Justice" refers to the Marine Corps ethos that has been carried over into a security organisation set up by a retired Marine Colonel. The central character is Cal, the Colonel's son, another marine used to fighting against the odds - a hero, but by no means invulnerable or infallible. It's interesting to see his character develop and to learn more of his background. There were a couple of eccentricities of layout (at least in the Kindle edition) - the first paragraph of each chapter was double spaced; and dialogue was presented as in a dramatic script - with the character's surname in bold caps, followed by the dialogue. I didn't much care for these oddities, as I found them mildly distracting - but not enough of a distraction to stop me reading. I'm glad to say subsequent books have a conventional layout. I really wanted to love this book. I barely liked it. The basis is good. The execution is not.
It is written in a movie or play script style. This becomes very distracting to the reader. It makes reading it difficult and literally pulls you away from the characters and the story.
It started off really interesting. There are sections that work well and pull you back in. I think if it had been written using a more traditional style I would have enjoyed it.
Except.... NO SEXY TIMES! Disappointment
I have 2 more of this authors books that I own.
I checked and they are clean also. Ugh.
Those I will put on my Not For Me shelf.
