New York Times bestselling author LISA KLEYPAS delivers the unforgettable tale of a strong-willed beauty who encounters her match in one of London's most notorious--yet irresistible--rakes . . . An eccentric wallflower  . . . Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she's ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger. A cynical rake  . . . After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught by a rebellious girl who couldn't be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He'll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil's own bargain. A perilous plot  . . . After succumbing to Gabriel's skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy--and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil's bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven . . .… (mais)

2nd read- This is my only 3 star in this series. This second time I don't think I found the heroine as annoying as I did the first time, but still she's not my favorite sort. And the hero has some wonderful lines, but otherwise I don't have strong feelings about him either. Now his *dad* on the other hand... ;) =D (Sebastian from Devil in Winter). Also it has a pet peeve of mine where they build up the hero's particular kink or something (he thinks only his mistress can fulfill his particular needs!) and then there's very little made of it when they actually go for it. I really don't care if they're into something kinky or not, but I dislike the trickery of making a huge deal over almost nothing. All of that aside, it's still a good book. Just not as good, IMO, as the rest of the series. ( )

I think my expectations were too high. This one didn't hold my interest and the pacing was off. A random plot event at p 270ish adds an entire section to the book that felt like an attempt to turn a novella into a longer work.

Gabriel is, of course, lovely. Kleypas herself said that he "didn't give her much to work with" with regard to flaws because he was brought up in such a happy family. Good, good. I get why the high drama wasn't there. It was a very sweet read, but not my favorite of hers. ( )

After all the months I’ve read this I just can’t stop thinking about it and before I returned the book to the library I would pick it up not infrequently and re-read certain sections so I think with hindsight I can definitely say I like this more than any other book in the series and I need to give it five stars.

Original review:

I really enjoyed this and I'm really glad I picked up another book in this series! I didn't like it quite as much as [b:Chasing Cassandra|44285731|Chasing Cassandra (The Ravenels, #6)|Lisa Kleypas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1565325290l/44285731._SY75_.jpg|68802096] but there was still a lot to love about this book. There was a lot of plot that was kind of shoved into the last 60 or so pages that maybe could have been spaced out better but I also enjoyed having a bit more action in this story.

I really enjoyed Pandora and Gabriel as a couple, though I definitely preferred the love interest in Cassandra. However, in contrast to the other romance that I read recently where a character changes their boundaries after falling in love, this book had Pandora being very firm with what she wanted while still recognizing that there are compromises in every relationship. Pandora is very sure of what she wants and recognizes when she simply cannot compromise on something and while Gabriel does say some stupid things and does have to learn how to respect some of Pandora's wishes, he still loves her despite what others may see as her flaws. This is always going to be the dynamic I prefer and I really enjoyed seeing it play out here.

This book seemed to have a bit more plot outside of the romance than Cassandra did, if I'm remembering correctly. It was all kind of crammed into the last third of the book but I wasn't expecting it at all and it was a welcome surprise for me considering I like some plot in my romances. This book also introduced or re-introduced me to some characters who Kleypas has written books for and it made me really want to read those books soon!

I'm definitely hoping to pick up some more books in this series in the near future. I have the ebook of Cold-Hearted Rake on hold and it's going to be available soon so hopefully I'll be able to dive into that shortly! ( )

Having just declared my love for Beatrix Hathaway, I needed to come back to her soul sister Pandora Ravenel. I adore these two Victorian weirdos (I wish they weren’t divided by twenty years), and Pandora takes eccentric to new levels. I love that she is the only one for Gabriel, Lord St Vincent, and his adoration of her eclipses his father’s for his mother (oh the lovely Evie and Sebastian). This book is my ultimate comfort read as there’s truly nothing about it I don’t like, and I would read about these two for hundreds of more pages. ( )

So here's the deal here. I think Pandora is fantastic. She's energetic, inventive, and apparently kisses like a pirate, which may be the most romantic thing I've ever read in my life. At the beginning of this book, I was really feeling it because Pandora was bouncing all over the place trying to decide if she liked this sexy guy enough to marry him just because they were caught in a hilarious misunderstanding right when she was poised to launch her own business. But right about the time when Gabriel convinced her to give it a try, I realized that he's not very interesting. He's supposed to be this cynical, repressed guy with a deviant sexual side (which amounts to one super tame scene where he ties her wrists to her corset, what an edgelord) but he usually just comes across as kind of patronizing towards Pandora, like she's an amusing golden retriever that he also wants to bang all the time (yuck). I actually thought she had better chemistry with her grim bearded bodyguard/footman Dragon since he wasn't constantly smiling indulgently at her antics and actually worked with her to figure stuff out. Plus he let her rename him Dragon in exchange for her not chopping off his beard, which was a way cuter scene than 90% of the ones Pandora and Gabriel had. There are still a few single Ravenels left (Cassandra, my main man West, and a secret Ravenel) so this series isn't over but this was only an okay entry in it for me. ( )
