Ever wonder what the future is like when humans have conquered death and become immortal?

That would cause over population problems wouldnt it....? So now some specialty trained humans are the only ones that can kill people. They are the Scythedome, but what happens when corruption starts entering the scythedome? Read this to find out. ( )

The year is 2042, and humanity and technology have progressed to the point where people live for hundreds of years. The only control on population growth are scythes, who mete out death in specific numbers, with the choice of whom to kill (glean) and how left to them -- a big responsibility. Two 16 year olds, Rowan Damisch and Citra Terranova, from very different backgrounds are chosen by the Honorable Scythe Faraday to become his apprentices after each displays desirable characteristics. Their training is intense until Faraday gleans himself, and the two acolytes are separated, assigned to drastically different mentors. I loved that Citra and her Scythe lived in the famous Frank Wright home, Falling Water. Meanwhile, Rowan is assigned to a power hungry maniac, who prefers mass slaughters and parties like Caligula, which horrifies Rowan. However, Citra and Rowan have an appointment with destiny as only one can become a scythe, and then has to glean the other as their first assignment. ( )

In the world of SCYTHE, by Neal Shusterman, humanity has evolved to a society where death comes via "gleaning"(murder) by a sacred, but mysterious, group of assassins call the Scythes. When a young man and woman, Citra and Rowan, are recruited to be trained into the Scythedom by a respected, wisened Scythe named Faraday, the hidden truths of the Scythe inner workings are revealed to them and each of them must make a monumental choice that could change the Scythedom forever.
The world Shusterman has created is well thought out and throughout the book, the little details that trickle out about it are a treat. The protagonists, Citra and Rowan, are feisty, interesting, and immediately likable. All of the supporting characters add such dimension to the book and I would happily read side stories about each of them. Shusterman does an excellent job of balancing predictable and unpredictable moments throughout the book, giving the reader equal parts reward and surprise. The narration of Greg Tremblay is truly outstanding, with a comforting voice and an ability to change between character voices enough for delineation, but without overdoing it or devolving into absurdity from trying too hard.
I am looking forward to reading/listening to the next book in the Arc of a Scythe series because SCYTHE was such a fun and exciting listen all the way through. ( )

This started out more of a three-star read. Engaging and fun, but not much more. Then the plot twists and turns started happening and I was hooked. Loved the wild ride this book took me on as well as the philosophical and moral questioned it posed. Hope I get my hands on the sequel soon. Borrowed this from a friend, so who knows. ( )

Summary: In a world where humans no longer die, it is up to the Scythe to keep the population under control and determine who will be "gleaned". Two teenagers are brought on as Scythe apprentices but the path to Scythedom will not be an easy one.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and there are many things this book does well.

I absolutely loved the world and the world-building. Within this world there is so much discussion about how death makes us appreciate life. I loved so much of the philosophizing that takes place in this book, primarily from journal entries of Scythes.

I really enjoyed some of the characters. I preferred Citra over Rowan but still enjoyed his story line. I thought Scythe Goddard was well written and while I didn't like him as a character or agree with many things he did I understood his perspective and loved how well developed he was as a character. I also really enjoyed Scythe Curie as a character.

I enjoyed the overall plot however I did feel like the author kept raising the stakes and raising the stakes. I felt the stakes were high enough and as we raised the stakes further and further the book got a bit away from what I was most enjoying about it. Suddenly, we aren't just asking questions about who the Scythe should be and looking at what death means but there is a whole lot more happening with unexpected twists and turns that I could have happily done without.

I had a good time with this book but I also felt it was pretty complete. This is book one in a trilogy and I am not feeling particularly compelled to read the other books in the series because this one wrapped up nicely.

I think this book is worth reading and I can confidently recommend to anyone with an interest in this type of book. ( )
