"Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep. When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she snatches one of the babies and flees into the snowy night. Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another--or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything."--Amazon.com… (mais)

A powerful novel of friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II, The Orphan's Tale introduces two extraordinary women and their harrowing stories of sacrifice and survival.

Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby.

But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one another - or if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

Truly one of the best books of this year. I am such a fan of WWII books and had no idea about the circus during this time. From page one I could not put it down. A must for every historical fiction #TBR list. ( )

The ending broke me and truly converted it from the 4 stars I thought I was going to give this. ( )

A very interesting story when it comes to a circus travelling during WW2. A circus that harbors Jews which really happened. Also true is the part about the children taken and left in a boxcar bound for a concentration camp which is Theo in this novel. I did find the novel a bit to simple of a love story being a bit Harloquin in style but the redeption comes in the last chapter or two. I am interested in finding out more stories that the archives of Yad Vashem have. ( )

I tend to enjoy most of WW2 fiction books. This one barely made that list. It started out good, life before, during the war, and how love ones got separated. Then there was the circus which was interesting at first but I lost interest after a while. The characters are likable enough that I'm still listening to the book. Good ending. ( )

This is the heartbreaking tale and breathtaking story of 17 year old Noa, who is living in Holland during the Nazi occupation and is ostracized by her after becoming pregnant by a soldier...Noa is a vivid character who shows the true type of of inner strength such horrendous events inspired in real people. .......her writing is much of a gift as her public service.

Hounded by the Nazi menace, the Circus Neuhoff travels to a refuge in occupied France. Both Noa and Astrid find men whom they love and whom they must struggle to save. Through the darkness of war, the circus lights twinkle on, the circus family lives and loves and laughs, all while beautiful athletes fly high above the crowd. It may seem a bit too neat and Hallmarkian to some, but Jenoff has written a tribute to the human spirit that soars in the midst of epic despair.
