A breathtaking fantasy romance inspired by Cinderella... Trystan spends her days in bleak isolation, with little hope that she will ever be free from her stepmother's cruel whims. When a wealthy and influential neighbor offers her both a fortune and her freedom, Trystan must decide whether to pay the price. Who is she willing to betray in order to gain her independence? What is she willing to sacrifice in order to pursue her forbidden relationship with the compelling young man whose face haunts her dreams? Trapped between the desire for love and the fate of her kingdom, Trystan attends the glittering Royal Masque, where she learns that her actions may have betrayed her prince, and thrust them both into a nightmare of conspiracy and deception. If she is to have any hope of redemption, Trystan must escape a dangerous web of duplicity, espionage and intrigue, though she may be forced to sacrifice her own happy ending to prevent her kingdom from falling into the hands of a ruthless adversary. An unforgettable tale of romance, intrigue and suspense, Traitor's Masque is the first book of the Andari Chronicles, a series of interconnected but stand-alone fairy tale retellings.… (mais)

This has got to be one of the best fairy-tale retellings I have seen, especially in comparison with others in the genre. The writing is fantastic, the characters are fascinating, the plot is well thought-out. Interestingly, there's no magic at all. If you love fairy tale retellings because of the fantastic, well, that's absent here. But if you love fairy tale retellings because of archetypally interesting characters in archetypal situations, this book is for you.

The two main characters are immediately likable. Tristan is an hopeless girl, oppressed by her stepmother; she just wants to be free. In addition to her archetypal situation (it is a Cinderella retelling, after all) she's got a smart mouth that gets her into trouble, and that makes the story pretty entertaining. The prince is fed up with being a prince, and only keeps at it because his sense of duty tells him his people need him (he's better than the alternative). All he wants is to be free. He's gotta get married for the sake of the kingdom--maybe the worst thing a monarch can do to his kingdom is screw up the succession--but he really wants to find someone he could actually like and be friends with, not some noble airhead or power-hungry social climber.

This book stands above the sea of Cinderella retellings because:
- The protagonists are very well developed. You understand why they do what they do, why they like whom they like, and so on. It is very frequent in this genre that you understand the woman's point of view pretty well, but you haven't the slightest idea why the man would be interested in her. Kenley Davidson's works do not have that problem at all.
- The protagonists are extremely likable. I have read this book a number of times now, mostly because I just wanted to get to know them better.
- The political machinations are fairly realistic. The clean fairy tale genre is full of charming stories which are astoundingly naive when it comes to politics. I have a few questions about some of the details here, but on the whole, it feels quite believable.
- The secondary characters are interesting and likable as well. (Many of them have their own stories later on in the series.)
- It's really quite funny, while having some deeply serious moments as well. The humor is verbal and character humor, which coexists quite well with a serious plot.
- She's just a darn good writer. Very few writers in this genre can throw words around like this.

This book is the first book of a good-sized series of fairy-tale retellings. All of them are well written. Most of them are fairy-tales without magic, like this one. I liked this one the most, but the others are fine too. ( )

This is not just a Cinderella re-telling. The traditional fairy tale plot line is the driver for Trystan's big decision, but there is so much more to this story than that. Our heroine must grapple with putting what she knows is right, not just over what she wants, but ultimately over her own freedom from an oppressive life, no small thing. She becomes a changed person in the process, but once decided, never wavers.

The main characters are fully fleshed out and likable, their banter together is fun, further rounding their personalities. I definitely rooted for them, and enjoyed the supporting characters as well. As a debut novel I think this was great, and I'm looking forward to more from Kenley Davidson! ( )
