"Natasha: I'm a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I'm definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won't be my story. Daniel: I've always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents' high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store--for both of us. The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?"--… (mais)

This is such a tough one to review! On the one hand, I absolutely loved the writing, the snippets into other people’s lives, the representation and the themes. On the other hand, I couldn’t get behind the main relationship.

I feel like the relationships would have worked so much better as an unlikely friendship rather than love at first sight. Two people trying to help each other, experiencing something so out of the ordinary, would have made so much more sense than somehow falling in love within hours. It just didn’t ring true, at all. In fact, I think I almost would have preferred if it was a friendship only for that one day, as well. Some people are meant to come into our lives and stay, some are meant to teach us something and leave, etc. That old thing.

I would definitely reread this or check out more by Nicola Yoon, just for the sake of the side stories more than anything, but otherwise this was more of a “yeah, I read that” three stars, because of the insta-love.

If you took that out? Easily could have been four to five stars. ( )

It’s a nice book for teenagers and the ending is somewhat different and I liked it albeit a bit cheesy ( )

To say I enjoyed this book would be the definition of an understatement. I devoured this book. I started it one morning and finished it that evening. The writing was truly addicting, and the short chapters added to that.

This book had so many things that I enjoyed about it. There was no spice, less swear words than other books, and my personal favorite was the multiple POVs. Most of the time, books are told in only the points of view of the main characters. In this book, however, almost any time a character was brought up who truly had a story behind them, they got a few pages to tell their part.

What I just said was just the plot devices and writing devices that I liked. The plot itself was fantastic! Love at first sight with only a day to spend together. Learning about their heritage and family history was incredible, and it made the characters seem that much more realistic. I don't want to say too much because I went into this book only knowing what was written on the back of it. One final thing to say, however, is I am not the type of person who normally can see the story happening like I am in the book, and it happened for me in this book.

I would truly recommend this book to anyone I met and honestly can give it 5 stars. I am not a crier and I almost cried, just to give you a warning if you are easy to tears. But please, TRY THIS BOOK! ( )

teen fiction (fate/"love at first sight" between an American-born poet from Korean immigrants and scientifically-minded Jamaican immigrant being deported). A tastefully and cleverly written story--I enjoyed the different perspectives presented in this latest by Nicola Yoon, and especially the portrayal of the otherwise random instigators (unknowingly affecting the lives of the two teens) as people with their own stories and histories. I did like the cover, but kind of wish we could actually see the diverse characters on display instead (because teens of different backgrounds also deserve to see non-white characters as protagonists, and for some reason booksellers don't think that such covers would still "sell"). The is a beautiful YA book which interweaves two characters, both of whom were either born in the country to foreign parents -- Daniel, or Natasha who is an illegal immigrant from Jamaica.
They meet one day by chance, and throughout the day are very drawn to each other and spend time learning about the parents, the life and the beliefs of each other.

Natasha knows she will be soon deported back to Jamaica while Daniel feels the burden of Korean parents who push him to become a doctor.

Interesting enough for me to read this in one sitting. ( )
