"Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious butterflies -- young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens. When the garden is discovered, a survivor is brought in for questioning. FBI agents Victor Hanoverian and Brandon Eddison are tasked with piecing together one of the most stomach-churning cases of their careers. But the girl, known only as Maya, proves to be a puzzle herself. As her story twists and turns, slowly shedding light on life in the Butterfly Garden, Maya reveals old grudges, new saviors, and horrific tales of a man who would go to any length to hold beauty captive. But the more she shares, the more the agents have to wonder what she's still hiding -- back cover.… (mais)

Finished this in a single sitting because I couldn't for the life of me, put it down! This is so mesmerizing, fascinating and horrifying at the same time that I feel quite overwhelmed and couldn't write a review for a long time.

Maya is a very unique character and her interactions with the FBI reminded me of the Cheshire Cat. I would read anything with Maya again but too bad the subsequent books in the series will follow the FBI in their investigations of other crimes. ( )

DNF - I probably got to about 15%. A different me put that on my shelf and left it there through some purges. Current me is not interested in girls that get kidnapped, raped, held prisoner, etc... and that doesn't even mention the shitty story line.

Won't rate because not my reading preference.

(when I got the KU book they offered a free audible version so that is why I listened to it)

Really interesting read, tied back to The Collector ([b:The Collector|243705|The Collector|John Fowles|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1394828024s/243705.jpg|1816452]) brilliantly but brought a new life and new edge to the story. Would recommend. Just be careful going in as there is a lot of allusion to SA, CSA, etc. as is common in this genre. ( )

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. If you want to know what it is like to be the victim of a psychopath a serial killer a rapist but without horrible awful graphics you got it. This is the psychological point how you become resigned to your lot in life. Then how you are rescued and you have to decide who do you trust how much do you tell ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

This is the story of a young adult who tells the FBI about her time as a kidnapped of a man they called the gardener, she and the other girls in the garden are his butterflies. She tells her story from beginning to end. The kidnap, the butterfly tattoo on her back, the rape, and all the other horrors along the way.

This story was actually really good. I mean totally messed up, but it held my attention. I like the main character because of the odd personality that she has, but it seemed to keep her sane. This is scary in a, good grief this could actually happen at some point, kind of way. I will be continuing the series. ( )
