Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend's future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt. What happens when a life is turned inside out? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion--from dark suffering to true happiness--a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. Narrator was new to me. She did a fine job. Not a theatrical performance with serious voice changes, just mild ones. (Amber Tamblyn)

This is my 8th novel by Alice Hoffman I need to vet out future choices better. Even though I loved a couple of her books it doesn't mean I'll love all of them. This was realistic fiction with none of her typical "magical realism" elements. Realistic fiction isn't a favorite genre of mine so that may have hurt my enjoyment. Also, the main character is a young woman, early 20s. I did not enjoy spending time with the main character and watching her growth from survivor to thriver. I'd consider it "new-adult". I think I would of enjoyed it more, if I was near the MC's age (and liked realistic fiction)

Q: Faithful" has a rather grim premise: A teenage girl ends up in a coma after her friend crashes a car. What prompted this idea?
A: When I write, I usually have a question that I need to have answered. For this book, it was: Can you have been so damaged at a young age and still be able to pull yourself together and find your way out? That's what I wanted to know, and that's where the character of Shelby led me. I'm a cancer survivor 18 years. But even before that, this is what I've been writing about. I think I've been writing continuously about survivor-ship. So, it is a grim premise, but I think of the book as funny and moving.

Q: Shelby mysteriously receives postcards at key moments in her life giving her advice. Do you think we all want such an "angel," as Shelby's mother calls him?
A: I feel that it's everyone's wish to have someone who really knows who they are. One of the ways that's accomplished is through reading. The postcards are a kind of symbol for reading. When we read a book, if the book is right for us, and if the book is good, it's not just that we know the characters — we feel known. We feel this connection. When I read "Catcher in the Rye," I thought: How did he know how I feel? To some extent, that's what happens to Shelby with those postcards: Somebody knows her. " ( )

Seriously? I just cannot handle a "I want to die because my best friend almost did and now she's in a coma" book. I struggle with mental illness and I'm not a fan when authors "play" it as a plot line in fiction and do it tritely. Disclaimer: I also feel ripped off when cancer pops up written by someone who has never had it or someone they love die from it. So this is personal. ( )

Beautifully written. It's a compelling tale and not a light one. Alice Hoffman's writing is lyrical and Shelby's struggles in the first part of the book are not an easy read because of her lack of self-worth, but slowly she comes to life again. Faithful is a story of redemption.

Not the easiest of Hoffman's reads, and maybe a bit more like Jodi Picoult that I was expecting, but a good read nonetheless. ( )

I had been delaying reading this for I don't even know why any more. Because it was amazing. It's a wonderful story of learning to live again, and finding connections, and moving on and believing in yourself.

Before this book the only Hoffman I'd read was Practical Magic back in high school. I liked it well enough but didn't search out other books. Partway through this book, however, I went and bought three other books by her. Hoffman's writing is gorgeous. I have highlighted passages throughout the book that are beautifully written or profound, or both. I really look forward to exploring her other works.

This is a beautiful book. Shelby, the main character, is badly broken when we first meet her, and I loved seeing her become her own person throughout the course of the book. I just can't help but love a character who steals abused animals. I also enjoyed the little bits of magical realism, though they are fairly subtle except for the beginning. At the same time there was this push-pull with reality. Very very lovely. So very glad I read it. Once I started, it was very hard to stop.

It's been awhile since I read anything by Hoffman -- I'm glad I did. Shelby Richmond's life takes a dramatic turn when she is a senior in high school -- she and her best friend Helene are in a car accident. Shelby survives, sort of. Helene doesn't, sort of. Helene is permanently on life support in her parents' home and becomes the source of miracles and other unexplained events. She is the "good one." Shelby spends time in a psych ward, then 2 years in her parents' basement incapable of facing life. This is the story of her climb back to the living. With the help of her pot-supplier/then boyfriend Ben who moves her to NYC and models a transformation to a new life, becoming an upstanding citizen and pharmacist, her unconditionally supportive mother Sue, and a mysterious "angel" who delivers artistic postcard unaddressed with messages like: Trust someone, want something, be something Shelby begins to heal. She becomes a healer as well, taking in stray dogs which ultimately leads her on a path to vet school. NYC is also good for her, because her identity is no longer tied to the accident, and the anonymity and busy-ness of the city let her lose the parts of herself she longed to escape. Befriending Maravelle, a single mother of three kids, also helps her begin to love other people and accept their love in return. An avid reader of fairy tales as a girl, Shelby longs for rescue or intervention, which finally does come from the most unlikely source, but she also learns that she needs to become an active participant in life.
