A Trail Through Leaves: The Journal as a Path to Place (1997)

To artist-writer-naturalist Hannah Hinchman, the blank pages of a journal are a call to awaken the soul, to celebrate being alive in the world, to get to know both the wilderness of our inmost selves and the "unpredictable and potent" natural world. In the richly illustrated pages of this book, she unfolds a myriad of wonders — the pattern of a bee abdomen, varieties of ice forms and sky colors, the joys of a garden — and shows us how to capture them on the page. Hinchman's respect for the miracle of our five senses, and her passion for what they can tell us about the world, is contagious. "Start with a smell, like a crushed marigold leaf, the sea, coal smoke," she advises, and from such raw materials begin to "decant the stuff of life" into journal form, "where it remains fresh, still tasting of its source." Even for one who has no intention of journal-keeping, to delve into Hinchman's own work is to see with new eyes. A Trail Through Leaves is a true gift and inspiration, a treasure-box of ways to write, draw, and be alive to the world. * "This is an important book, brilliantly produced. Its light will linger a long, long time." — John R. Stilgoe, professor in the history of landscape, Harvard University * "[B]oth a rich work of performance art and a personal growth tool with many handles." — Boston Globe… (mais)

A TRAIL offers many intriguing drawings and loving descriptions of nature, wildlife, animals, and cats.

Unfortunately, they are often interwoven with some pretty negative self introspection and observations.

Readers may be inspired to take up pens and blank books and wander outside to draw, then move deeper
into creating art. ( )

Loved it. Gorgeous book. It's going to hurt to take this one back to the library.

Very artsy and difficult for my pea brain to absorb. ( )

Can I give a book more than five stars? This sweet book is like having a sister without all the teasing. If you love nature and art and chats by the fire you will love this book. Hinchman shares techniques on observing and recording nature while sharing a bit of her soul. Wish I lived out west so I could take a class from her. ( )

I received this book in a BookCrossing trade, and it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I expected it to be more exercises on ways to enhance personal journaling. It did cover this subject, but the author spent a lot of time detailing her own experiences with journaling. She also discussed drawing (she illustrates her journals), and that’s not something I’m interested in at this time. I don’t want to sound negative about the book, because I think it might be something that others would really like. But I just didn’t “connect” with the author, so I ended up skimming a lot of what she’d written. If this sounds like a book you'd like to read, though, let me know - I'd be happy to send it out to anyone who is interested in reading it, and I have a feeling there are a few of my fellow journaleers who might find it really enjoyable.

When I began my first journal, I meant it to be a volume of woods lore, based on Ernest Thomson Seton's Two Little Savages, his illustrated volume of life in the wild.
