I'm pretty much a die hard fan of this series, and now that it's done, I'm sad.

For the sake of my aching heart, I'm going to reread it again and revel in its moments of light-heartedness, its pain, its desperate hope.

Well, there was a bit of pain in the first volume, a lot of light-heartedness, and a taste of the promise to come. The nine-tailed demon fox is still far off on the horizon, but for now, we've got cute character exploration and distant goals. Pretty standard for most manga, really, but it's the heart in the series that keeps me coming back for more.

True heart. I always look for that in anything I read, and it doesn't matter one bit where I find it, as long as I find it.

The reason I keep coming back for this manga is because it never lost heart, including more and more until it fair burst upon the land. Huge effects and battles, the end of the world, you name it, it's here... but it's the characters that make it really shine. If you like your peeps to level up, then you'll love this series.

Volume one is but a tiny, tiny taste of some really great stuff, but it's how the people change and grow that brings me to my inevitable tears.

The story starts off 13 years where a ninetails fox attacked a certain village know as the Hidden leaf village. This led to the leader of the village otherwise know as the hokage to seal the monster away into himself and his newborn son. After this disaster occurred disastrous day happened people started to treat the kid who the ninetails was sealed inside of the kid's name is Naruto. 13 years Naruto is in class where he is a class who fails all of his subjects. Knowing he wasn't going to pass. For the exam he had to create a shadow clone of himself so that he could be on to beocme a genin ninja. As you know he fails really bad to the point where he has to take another year. So a teacher tells him to still a scroll full of forbidding justus. So naruto studys the one he needs to pass before the corrupted teacher starts to chase him and still the scroll. Then another teacher who isn't corrupted starts to attack the corrupted teacher until naruto comes and saves him by using multi shadow clown justu knocking the corruppted teacher out. there on there on the spot that day naruto becomes a genin.

I really like this book since,Naruto gives viewers and readers alike a huge cast of characters to look through and invest time into. ... Best of all, most characters get good attention and are well developed until the very end.

My history with this series: I first read this volume when I was a wee Jilly in 2005, in 8th grade. I collected up to volume 6, and I had started watching the anime as well. I had a Gaara wallet and multiple Gaara keychains, a phone charm, Naruto and Kakashi keychains, a Sand Village wristband, etc. I was sold. (I still have all of those things, and now I've put some of the keychains on my work bag and lanyard.)

Sometime in 9th grade, however, the dub came out, and that was around the time I stopped watching. I was somewhere in the "We have to get Sasuke back!" arc, so I've never seen the end of the Orochimaru stuff, or gotten to Shippuden or any of that. I think the real world was wholly inundated with Naruto at that point because of all the new fans that the dub created, and I was just burnt out.

All of that said, I've wanted to go back for years. I always kept my six volumes of the manga, and now I've started buying the rest from thriftbooks because, holy crap, it's cheap and the books are in great condition.

For my actual review:

There's a reason people get sucked into this series. It's not just COOL NINJA STUFF!!! and NON-STOP ACTION SCENES!!!. The characters and their stories wriggle their way into your heart, and they sort of lodge there. I don't read/watch ongoing series because I forget too much while waiting for more volumes/seasons, but I still remember huge chunks of this series and its characters, 14 years later. That's got to mean something.

Even if you've never been treated as an outcast like Naruto, or have never had to work yourself to exhaustion just so that people won't look at you like you shouldn't exist, you can still empathize with and love these characters, and that's a big draw of this series. Also, the outfit designs. I've always found them incredibly interesting and clever.

Equal parts action, humor, and sentimental storytelling--that's what has kept me wanting to come back to Naruto for so many years. And now I finally have. ( )

Picked a Manga after a long time. I liked this volume a lot. The drawings were skillful. Concept was interesting. I found it to be funny.

Can we have good characters though? Naruto is a loud, dumb, overconfident brat. Sakura can't focus on anything other than the boy she is infatuated with. Sasuke is the know it all guy who thinks less of everyone.

I'm overlooking that because its the first volume. I'm assuming the characters will mature later on. Would have given 4 stars if not for the few nude drawings.

I know that people will probably wanna lynch me for saying this but Naruto Has a crappy story!! It started good enough "a kid ninja that has a powerfool demon sealed inside him and so on.." but the sasuke thing has gone long enough. I thought this was a shonen manga but, judging from Naruto's obsession with Sasuke it's closer to Shonen Ai. ( )
